Key facts
- A big text generator draws each letter on a small grid, here seven rows high, using block characters as pixels; the Fill options are Solid, Dark, Medium, Hash and Compact.
- Big text keeps its shape only in a monospace font, such as Discord code blocks, terminals and README code fences; in proportional fonts the rows drift apart.
- The banner blocks are █ FULL BLOCK (U+2588), ▀ UPPER HALF BLOCK (U+2580) and ▄ LOWER HALF BLOCK (U+2584), in long-established Unicode ranges that nearly every font covers.
- Half blocks give a letter twice the vertical resolution in the same number of lines, so Compact letters look rounder and take fewer lines.
- A single five-row letter uses roughly 40 characters, so a six-letter word can pass the limits on X and in bios.
- Banner letters are five to seven characters wide, so three to six letters is the readable range before lines wrap.
This big text generator turns a short word into large banner letters built from block characters, seven rows tall, with five fill styles and adjustable letter spacing. It is for Discord code blocks, terminal banners, README titles and code comments, and it returns plain text you can copy as it is or wrapped for Discord.
How to use the big text generator
- Type a short word in the Your text box. It is shown in capitals, and three to six letters is the readable range.
- Pick a fill (Solid, Dark, Medium, Hash or Compact) and a Letter spacing option.
- Press Copy banner, or Copy for Discord to wrap it in a code block, then paste it somewhere that uses a monospace font.
Worked example: a Discord banner
Typing HI with the Solid fill gives a banner seven lines tall:
█ █ █████
█ █ █
█ █ █
█████ █
█ █ █
█ █ █
█ █ █████
Choose Copy for Discord and paste it into a message; the backticks it adds switch Discord to a monospace font. The gotcha is width: a longer word will wrap on a phone and break the rows apart.
What big text is
Big text is lettering enlarged by repetition: each letter is drawn on a small grid, several lines high, using block characters as pixels. It is the same trick that old terminals, bulletin boards and command-line tools used for banners. The generator above turns your text into that grid and offers some single-line large-letter styles too, so you can pick what suits where you will paste it.
A letter built from blocks looks like this at 5 rows high, with each row on its own line. Pasted into a code block, it lines up. Pasted into a chat message in a proportional font, it does not.
The characters behind it
The blocks come from two old Unicode ranges.
| Character | Code point | Name | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| █ | U+2588 | FULL BLOCK | The solid “pixel” |
| ▀ | U+2580 | UPPER HALF BLOCK | Half-height pixel, top |
| ▄ | U+2584 | LOWER HALF BLOCK | Half-height pixel, bottom |
| ░ ▒ ▓ | U+2591 to U+2593 | LIGHT, MEDIUM, DARK SHADE | Textured fills |
| ╔ ═ ╗ ║ ╚ ╝ | U+2554 to U+255D | Box drawings, double | Outlined letters and frames |
Using half blocks lets a letter be drawn with twice the vertical resolution in the same number of lines, so the letters look rounder and take fewer lines. Because these characters were designed for text terminals, they are safe on nearly every platform, but they were designed for fixed-width cells.
Where it works and where it does not
Whether a banner works depends on one thing: does the place you paste it use a monospace font?
| Place | Banner letters | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Discord code block (triple backticks) | Works | Rows align; the most common use |
| Terminal, command line, README code blocks | Works | Designed for it |
| Code editors and plain-text notes in monospace | Works | Check the font setting |
| Discord normal message | Usually misaligned | Proportional font |
| WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS | Usually misaligned | Proportional font; WhatsApp has a monospace format with backticks that can help |
| Instagram, TikTok and X bios | Mostly breaks | Short lines, proportional font |
| Email and documents | Depends | Set the text to a monospace font such as Courier |
The WhatsApp point and the Discord one are worth testing: put three backticks around the text and see if the app switches to fixed-width. We have not verified every app, so test with a short word first.
Tips for readable big text
- Keep it short. Three to six letters. Each letter is five to seven characters wide, so a long word wraps and falls apart.
- Use capitals and digits. Most banner fonts have the cleanest shapes for A to Z and 0 to 9. Lowercase is often just the capital in smaller form.
- Check line length. If the app wraps lines at 40 characters, six letters of width-7 each overflow.
- Add space around it. A blank line above and below stops it merging with other text.
- Keep a plain-text version. Screen readers will not make sense of a banner, and search will not index it.
Other big styles
If a multi-line banner is more than you need, the same page offers single-line options. Fullwidth letters are about twice as wide as normal ones and work in proportional fonts, and a bold text style gives weight without extra width. For rounded, playful letters see bubble text, and for the stretched aesthetic look try vaporwave text. For a picture rather than text, the lettering image maker makes large letters as an image.
Discord, terminals and code comments
Discord
Three backticks, a new line, the banner, a new line, three backticks. If the banner is wider than the chat column, it wraps. Narrower banners fit on mobile.
Terminals and READMEs
Banner text is a long tradition for start-up messages and project titles. In a Markdown file, put it inside a fenced code block so it keeps its alignment.
Source code
Many developers put a banner in a comment above a section. Keep the width to about 80 characters, like most editors.
A note on size
Big text is long. A single five-row letter uses roughly 40 characters, so a six-letter word is over 200 characters, which can exceed limits in platforms such as X and bios. Check the platform’s limit before you paste. Our platform pages list the limits we have sources for.
Troubleshooting
The letters are slanted or staggered
The app is using a proportional font. Move the banner inside a code block, or switch the app’s font to monospace, if it allows. Another cause is the app wrapping long lines, which splits each row; reduce the number of letters.
There are gaps between the rows
Some fonts add line spacing that opens gaps between block rows. A different monospace font, or a terminal set to a tight line height, fixes this. It is a display setting rather than a problem with the text.
Some letters look odd
Block fonts have to simplify letters such as M, W and R into a limited grid. If one letter reads poorly, try the half-block style, which has more resolution, or the outlined version.
The text got longer than the limit
Use a single-line large style instead of a banner, or shorten the word. A short, bold word is nearly always better than a long banner, which is the habit that makes any big text generator worth using.
