Key facts
- Steam profile names are capped at 32 UTF-16 code units and 128 UTF-8 bytes (Steamworks ISteamFriends docs).
- Bold, cursive, gothic and other math-alphabet letters use 2 UTF-16 units each, so about 16 of them fit in a Steam profile name.
- A Steam account name is the login and cannot be changed, even by Steam Support, according to third-party summaries of Steam's help.
- The Steam profile name has no change cooldown according to third-party guides, so you can try styles and revert.
- Many games show your Steam profile name directly, and each game sets its own font and length limit, so a symbol can show as a box or be cut off.

- Profile name (persona)Partly
Limit: 32 chars
Steamworks sets two caps: 32 UTF-16 code units and 128 UTF-8 bytes (ISteamFriends docs). Bold, cursive, gothic and other math-alphabet letters use 2 units each, so about 16 of them fit. No change cooldown, per third-party guides.
- Account name (login)No
Used to sign in and cannot be changed, even by Steam Support, according to third-party summaries of Steam's help. Keep it separate from your styled display name.
- Profile summary and commentsYes
Free-text fields that display pasted Unicode. Steam also has its own BBCode-style tags in some text areas; we did not verify which areas take them.
- In-game namesPartly
Many games show your Steam profile name directly, and each game decides its own font and length limit. A symbol that looks fine on Steam can show as a box or be cut off in a game.

These Steam fonts turn your profile name, summary or comment into styled Unicode letters that you copy and paste into Steam. The page explains the 32-unit name limit and why styled letters use two units each, the difference between account name and profile name, and what breaks in games.
How to use Steam fonts
- Type or paste your text in the box at the top. Every style updates as you type.
- Pick a style. Bold sans and small caps use fewer units than symbols and gothic; check the count.
- Tap Copy on the row you like, then in Steam open Edit Profile, paste it into Profile Name or the summary, and save.
Profile name, account name and custom URL
Steam keeps three identifiers apart, and only one of them is for decoration.
| Identifier | Purpose | Styled Unicode |
|---|---|---|
| Profile name | The public name friends and games show | Yes, within limits |
| Account name | Your sign-in login | No; not changeable |
| Custom URL | Optional profile web address | Plain letters and numbers only |
The profile name is what shows in your friends list, chat, lobbies and any game that reads your Steam identity. The length limit below comes from Valve’s Steamworks documentation. The no-cooldown and account-name points come from third-party guides and are labeled that way.
How the 32-character limit works
Valve’s Steamworks documentation defines two limits for a persona name: at most 32 UTF-16 code units and at most 128 UTF-8 bytes. A name has to fit both, and for styled text the 32-unit limit is the one you hit first.
| What you type | UTF-16 units | UTF-8 bytes | Most that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
Plain letters: Frost |
1 each | 1 each | 32 |
| Small caps: ꜰʀᴏꜱᴛ | 1 each | 2 or 3 each | 32 |
| Bold, gothic, cursive, typewriter: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭 | 2 each | 4 each | 16 |
| Square black: 🅵🆁🅾🆂🆃 | 2 each | 4 each | 16 |
Math-alphabet letters such as 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 sit outside Unicode’s Basic Multilingual Plane, so each one is stored as two UTF-16 units and four UTF-8 bytes. Sixteen of them use all 32 units but only 64 bytes, which is why the byte cap rarely matters. The counter above the generator uses the same UTF-16 count.
What this means in practice:
- A 10-letter name in a mathematical alphabet uses 20 of the 32 units, so it fits with room for a short frame.
- Small caps is the way to fit a longer styled name: each letter costs one unit.
- A frame such as
【 】or꧁ ꧂uses one unit per symbol, and the glitch style adds one unit per mark. - If the editor refuses to save or shortens the name, remove a styled letter or the frame first.
How to change it
- Open Steam and click your profile name, then choose Profile.
- Choose Edit Profile.
- Paste your styled name into Profile Name and save.
Third-party guides report no cooldown and no cost, so you can test several styles in a row. Because the account name is separate, changing the profile name never affects how you sign in.
Which styles are worth using
Steam’s client is built for dark backgrounds and fairly small type in friend lists, so the same rules apply as in the Discord member list: heavy letters win.
| Style | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bold gothic | 𝕱𝖗𝖔𝖘𝖙 𝖂𝖔𝖑𝖋 | Strong shapes, popular in shooters |
| Small caps | ꜰʀᴏꜱᴛ ᴡᴏʟꜰ | Clean; fewer glyph problems than rare blocks |
| Typewriter | 𝙵𝚛𝚘𝚜𝚝 𝚆𝚘𝚕𝚏 | Tactical, minimal look |
| Square black | 🅵🆁🅾🆂🆃 🆆🅾🅻🅵 | Bold blocks; capital letters only, and emoji-like rendering varies |
| Glitch (light) | F̷r̵o̶s̷t̴ ̶W̵o̶l̶f̸ | Eye-catching but can overlap the line above and below |
Add a frame from the Frame menu if you want the name to read at a glance in a long friends list: bracket frames like 【 】 or 「 」 are easy to read.
In-game behavior
Steam is the identity layer for a lot of games, and that is where problems appear. When a game shows your Steam profile name, it draws it with its own font. If that font lacks a glyph, you see a box or a gap; if it uses a shorter length limit, your name may be cut off. Most players do not notice until a lobby or scoreboard shows the damage.
Before you commit to an elaborate name:
- Join a lobby or match in the game you play most and look at your own name on the scoreboard.
- Ask a friend on a different device or language setting what they see.
- Keep a plain-letter core, such as
Frost Wolf, so teammates can say it aloud and use in-game commands that match a name.
Some competitive games and communities also have name rules (offensive terms, impersonation of staff), and servers can rename or kick players whose names break them. That is a game or server choice, not a Steam rule. For game-specific naming guides, see Fortnite fonts, Roblox fonts and Minecraft fonts.
Profile summary, comments and showcases
The summary box and comments are free-text fields, so they accept pasted Unicode. A neat structure keeps them readable:
『 𝕱𝖗𝖔𝖘𝖙 𝖂𝖔𝖑𝖋 』
Main: support · Rank: Gold
Add me after a game, not before
The styled line gives the page a header; the plain lines carry what a visitor may want to copy or search. Steam also uses its own text markup in some areas such as reviews and guides, but we did not verify which fields support it, so use the formatting buttons Steam shows rather than guessing tags.
What can go wrong
- Boxes in a game or on a device with missing fonts. The boxes guide covers why a font can drop out inside a game overlay.
- Hard-to-add name. Friends cannot search for a styled name by typing plain letters. Share your friend code or profile link instead.
- Moderation. Names that imitate staff or contain banned terms can be changed by platform or game moderators, with or without notice.
- Screen readers. Styled letters may be spoken letter by letter; see the accessibility guide.
For matching names across platforms, the stylish name generator and the gothic generator give you consistent looks, and the text decorator adds frames.
A quick testing routine
The length limit is documented, but how each game draws your name is not, so a short routine protects you:
- Paste the styled name into the Profile Name box and save it.
- Open your profile in the Steam client and in a browser, since the two may draw characters with different fonts.
- Open your friends list and look at your own entry; this is the small-type view most people will see.
- Launch the game you play most and look for your name in a lobby or on a scoreboard.
- If any step shows boxes or a cut-off name, remove the rarest character and repeat.
The whole routine takes a couple of minutes and costs nothing, because the profile name has no reported cooldown. It is also worth keeping your previous name written down, so you can restore it if a new style looks wrong in a game you cannot open right away.
Test any name in a game before you rely on it, since Steam fonts that look fine on Steam can break in a game’s own interface.
