Key facts
- A bold text generator replaces each letter with a bold Unicode character, so the result pastes as text into posts that have no bold button.
- Unicode has four bold alphabets in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block: Bold Sans, Bold Serif, Bold Italic Serif and Bold Italic Sans.
- Only the two upright bold styles have bold digits: Bold Serif uses U+1D7CE to U+1D7D7 and Bold Sans uses U+1D7EC to U+1D7F5.
- On X, each bold letter counts as two characters, so a 280-character post fits about 140 bold letters.
- Screen readers may read bold Unicode as "mathematical bold" symbols, so keep names, keywords and hashtags in plain text.
- Unicode bold is the only option in a Discord display name or a WhatsApp About line; in messages, both apps have real bold.
Bold text from this generator is made of Unicode characters, not formatting, so it works in places that have no bold button, such as ๐๐ถ๐ด ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ in a LinkedIn, X, Instagram or Facebook post. Pick sans, serif or bold italic, copy it, and your text never leaves your browser.
How to use the bold text generator
- Type or paste your text in the box at the top. Every bold style updates as you type.
- Pick a style. Bold Sans blends in with most apps; Bold Serif looks more like a headline.
- Tap Copy on the row you like, then paste it into your post, caption or bio.
Worked example: a bold LinkedIn hook
Typing We are hiring gives ๐ช๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด in Bold Sans. Paste it as the first line of the LinkedIn post and keep the rest in plain text; the gotcha is that LinkedIn search may not match bold letters, so put the job title in plain text as well.
Four bold alphabets, and how they differ
Unicode includes four complete bold alphabets in its Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. They were added so that mathematicians could tell a bold v (a vector) apart from a plain v, but they paste anywhere modern text works:
| Style | Example | Digits | Feels like | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bold Sans | ๐ก๐ฒ๐ ๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ | ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฏ | The appโs own interface font | LinkedIn and X hooks. It blends with the surrounding text, so it reads as โboldโ, not โdecoratedโ. |
| Bold Serif | ๐๐๐ฐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ | ๐๐๐๐ | A newspaper headline | Quotes, book or film titles, a more formal tone. |
| Bold Italic Serif | ๐ต๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ | none | Emphasis inside a quotation | A single word you want to stress. |
Most phones and social apps draw their interface in a sans-serif font. That makes Bold Sans the least conspicuous choice: on LinkedIn or X it looks close to what a real bold button would produce. Bold Serif changes the typeface as well as the weight, so it reads more like a deliberate design choice.
Unlike cursive or italic, the bold alphabets have no gaps. Every letter AโZ and aโz exists in all four, so you never get one letter that looks out of step with the rest.
Bold numbers, and where they help
Only the two upright styles have bold digits. Unicode never encoded italic or bold italic numbers, so if you type โTop 10 tipsโ into Bold Italic Serif, the 10 stays plain.
| Digits | Style | Code points |
|---|---|---|
Bold digits work well as list markers in a caption that canโt hold real formatting:
๐ฆ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐ญ: Pick a theme ๐ฆ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐ฎ: Shoot in daylight ๐ฆ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐ฏ: Post before 9 a.m.
Keep them out of anything someone needs to act on. A bold phone number or discount code may not dial, paste into a form or match at checkout, because to the software those are different characters from 0โ9.
Where to copy and paste bold text
Copy and paste is the whole trick: some of the busiest text boxes on the internet have no formatting at all, so bold has to arrive as characters.
- LinkedIn posts. In our testing the feed composer showed no bold or italic button (we have not found a LinkedIn help page that says so; long-form articles do have formatting). A bold first line is the common way to make a postโs hook visible before the โโฆsee moreโ cut.
- X posts. In our observation a standard post has no formatting options. A bold opening phrase or a bold label such as ๐ง๐;๐๐ฅ helps a thread scan.
- Instagram captions and bios. Useful for section labels in a long caption (๐๐ป๐ด๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐, ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ฑ) or a bold line at the top of a bio.
- Facebook posts and comments. The post box has no bold, so Unicode is the workaround. Avoid it in your profile name: Facebookโs name rules forbid symbols and unusual characters. Our Facebook fonts page lists which fields accept what.
- Display names. Discord, TikTok and Instagram display names accept bold letters, while @usernames donโt.
What bold Unicode costs you
Because these are different characters, not formatted ones, they come with trade-offs that real bold doesnโt have.
Screen readers may read it as gibberish
A screen reader reaching ๐๐๐ฐ may say โmathematical bold capital N, mathematical bold small eโฆโ or skip the word entirely, depending on the software and version. One bold word in a post is a small annoyance; a bold paragraph can make the whole post unusable for blind followers. Our guide to fancy text and accessibility covers what VoiceOver, TalkBack and NVDA typically do.
Search and hashtags may not match
Bold Unicode may not match plain-text search or hashtags, so keep keywords and hashtags in plain text. To a computer, ๐๐๐ฅ๐ and Sale are different strings. Unicode does define a โcompatibilityโ mapping (NFKC normalization) that folds bold letters back to plain ones, but whether a given platformโs search applies it isnโt published. Assume that a bold keyword may not be found by in-app search, and that a bold hashtag, if it links at all, is a different tag from the plain one.
X counts every bold letter twice
X weights characters by code point. Anything at or above U+1100 counts as two, and every bold letter sits around U+1D400.
| What you type | Plain weight | Bold weight |
|---|---|---|
| Sale | 4 | 8 |
| Step 1 | 6 | 11 (the space stays 1) |
| A full post of letters | 280 letters | about 140 letters |
The details panel on each style shows its X count as you type. For the full breakdown by platform, see character limits for fancy text and the X (Twitter) fonts page.
Copying it elsewhere can break things
Bold Unicode travels badly outside social apps. Pasted into a rรฉsumรฉ, a job application form, a spreadsheet or an email subject line, it may be rejected, shown as boxes on the recipientโs device, or sorted out of alphabetical order. Applicant tracking systems and spam filters process text by character, so a bold word in a CV or subject line may not register as the word you meant. Use the formatting tools of the document or email app instead (our email subject line guide has the details), and save Unicode bold for places that genuinely have none.
Use the real bold when the app has one
Many apps already support proper bold. It costs nothing in accessibility or search, so use it where it exists:
| App | How to bold | Works in names? |
|---|---|---|
*bold* with single asterisks |
No. Use Unicode in your About or group name. | |
| Discord (messages) | **bold**, or ***bold italic*** |
No. Markdown only renders in chat. |
| Telegram | Select text, then Bold; or **bold** on desktop |
No |
| Slack | *bold* or Ctrl/Cmd + B |
No |
| Reddit, GitHub (Markdown) | **bold** |
No |
| Word, Google Docs, email | Ctrl/Cmd + B | Not applicable |
The pattern is consistent: real formatting works in messages but never in profile names. Names are where Unicode bold is genuinely the only option. Our pages for WhatsApp fonts and Discord fonts go deeper into each appโs formatting codes, including the newer quote and list syntax.
How much to bold
A practical rule: bold the part someone should read if they read nothing else. In a LinkedIn post thatโs the first line, and maybe one key figure. In a caption itโs section labels. Compare:
Our new studio is open Monday to Saturday, walk-ins welcome.
The second version is easier to read, cheaper on Xโs character count and kinder to screen-reader users, and the bold still catches the eye. If youโd rather lean than shout, the italic text generator gives a lighter kind of emphasis with the same copy-and-paste approach.
Used sparingly, this bold text generator gives a post a clear first line without costing you search, accessibility or characters.
