How to write a bio that does its job

An Instagram bio has one task: tell a stranger in about three seconds who you are and why to follow you. Everything else, the symbols, the styles, the emoji, is seasoning. Three questions help:

  1. Who is it for? A friend reading your profile and a customer reading it want different things. Name the audience in your head before you write.
  2. What do you post? “Street photography in Lisbon” tells someone what to expect. “Living my best life” does not.
  3. What should they do next? One action: follow, check the link, send a message, buy. Two actions dilute both.

Put the most useful words first. In the profile header only the first couple of lines are visible without scrolling on a small phone, and the rest competes with your highlights and grid.

The 150-character limit

Instagram’s bio field takes up to 150 characters, according to the Instagram Help Center. Spaces, emoji, symbols and line breaks all use characters. Styled Unicode letters usually count as one each, but a few decorative symbols are stored as two code units, so a bio that looks like 148 might show as 151. Leave a few characters spare.

Element Typical cost
Plain letter or space 1
Styled letter such as 𝗔 or 𝓐 1 (usually)
Emoji 1 to 2 or more, depending on the emoji
Line break 1
Frame pair such as ✦ ✦ 2 plus spaces

For a closer look at how counters treat different characters, see the guide to character limits.

Line breaks

Short lines read better than a paragraph of 150 characters. On the phone app you can tap Return while editing the bio and the break stays. If a break disappears when you save, write the bio in a notes app, copy it and paste it into Instagram. A common layout:

𝓜𝓪𝔂𝓪 𝓛𝓲𝓷 | photographer
Lisbon · film & light
New zine ↓

Three short lines read faster than one long one, and the first line carries the name or role in the plainest form.

Where fancy text helps, and where it does not

Styled letters work in the bio and in the Name field, because they are ordinary Unicode. They do not work in the @username. A few cautions that matter in practice:

  • Search. Instagram search is reported not to match styled letters to plain ones, so a styled name can make you harder to find. Keep a plain version of your searchable name in the Name field or the bio.
  • Boxes. Older phones may show empty squares for rare styles. Bold, italic and script letters have the best support. The boxes guide explains which blocks fail first.
  • Screen readers. Styled letters may be spoken letter by letter or skipped. Keep key information in plain text; the accessibility guide lists what to avoid.
  • Overuse. A bio that is entirely decorated is tiring to read. One styled phrase is plenty.

The Instagram fonts generator shows every style next to a character count, and the text decorator adds frames and dividers.

Choosing a style by mood

Mood Try Example
Soft and dreamy Bold script 𝓼𝓸𝓯𝓽 𝓵𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽
Calm and tidy Small caps ꜱʟᴏᴡ ᴍᴏʀɴɪɴɢꜱ
Strong and clear Bold sans 𝗕𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀.
Retro and techy Monospace 𝟷𝟸𝟶 𝙱𝙿𝙼
Dark and dramatic Bold gothic 𝕹𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝕽𝖆𝖎𝖉𝖊𝖗

Making a bio your own

Every line above is a template. Replace the nouns first: your city, your craft, your coffee order. Then replace the verb, because “chasing good days” and “collecting small moments” sound different. Finally read it aloud. If you would never say it to a friend, it is probably too polished, and a simpler line will do better.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Instagram bio be?
The bio field holds up to 150 characters, according to Instagram's Help Center. Spaces, emoji and line breaks all count. Styled Unicode letters usually count as one character each, but some symbols may use more room behind the scenes, so leave a few characters spare and watch the counter while you type.
How do I add line breaks to my Instagram bio?
On the phone app, tap Return on your keyboard while editing the bio and the line break stays. If a break disappears, type the bio in a notes app, copy it with the breaks and paste it into Instagram. Each break counts as a character, so shorter lines use less of your 150.
Can I use fancy fonts in my Instagram bio?
Yes, in the bio and the Name field, because they accept ordinary Unicode characters. They do not work in your @username, which only takes letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Keep the words people search for in plain letters, and style only a heading or a short phrase.
Do fancy bios hurt accessibility?
They can. Screen readers may read styled letters one at a time or skip them, and Instagram search does not reliably match styled letters to plain ones. Put your name, location and contact details in plain text and use styled text for decoration only. Our accessibility guide explains the details.
Can I copy these bios as they are?
Yes. They are original, so copy one and replace the details with your own. Changing the job, city, hobby or a punchline makes it yours and avoids sounding like everyone else who copied the same line. Keep the character count in mind when your replacement words are longer.
