Key facts

  • An italic text generator replaces each letter with a slanted Unicode character, so the result pastes as text where there is no italic button.
  • Unicode has four italic alphabets: Italic Sans, Italic Serif, Bold Italic Serif and Bold Italic Sans, all in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block.
  • Serif italic borrows its lowercase h from โ„Ž (U+210E PLANCK CONSTANT), because Unicode left the italic h slot empty.
  • Unicode has no italic or bold italic digits, so numbers stay upright in every italic style.
  • On X, each italic letter counts as two characters toward the 280-character limit.
  • Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn feed posts and X posts have no italic formatting; WhatsApp (italic) and Discord (italic) do.

This italic text generator turns plain typing into slanted Unicode letters, such as ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ, that you copy and paste into Instagram, LinkedIn, X or TikTok where there is no italic button. Choose sans, serif or bold italic, and your text never leaves your browser.

How to use the italic text generator

  1. Type or paste your text in the box at the top. Every italic style updates as you type.
  2. Pick a style. Italic Sans looks closest to your appโ€™s own font; Italic Serif is more bookish.
  3. Tap Copy on the row you like, then paste it into a caption, bio or post.

Worked example: an italic bio tagline

Typing Notes from home gives ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ in Italic Sans. Paste it under your plain-text name in an Instagram or TikTok bio; in the serif version (๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’) the h is the borrowed โ„Ž and may look slightly different.

Start with the odd letter out: the italic h

Type โ€œtheโ€ into the Italic Serif style and you get ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’. Look closely at the h. On many phones it sits a little taller, thinner or bolder than the letters around it.

Thatโ€™s because Unicodeโ€™s mathematical italic alphabet has a hole. When the alphabet was added in 2001, an italic h already existed as โ„Ž (U+210E), the symbol physicists use for the Planck constant, in the older Letterlike Symbols block. Rather than encode the same shape twice, Unicode reserved the slot where the italic h would go (U+1D455) and left it permanently empty. Every generator that produces serif italic has to borrow โ„Ž to fill the gap.

What that means in practice:

  • Words with a lot of hโ€™s show it most. ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘˜๐‘ , โ„Ž๐‘ข๐‘ โ„Ž and ๐‘€๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘›๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘  are where a mismatched font becomes visible.
  • The other italic styles have no gap. Sans italic ๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ and bold italic ๐’‰๐’–๐’”๐’‰ use their own h, so if the serif version looks uneven on your screen, switch.
  • Donโ€™t mix it up with โ„. The h with a bar (U+210F) is the reduced Planck constant, a different symbol that some symbol pickers list next to โ„Ž.

Serif italic or sans italic

Four italic alphabets are available, two light and two bold:

Style Example Character Pick it when
Italic Sans ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ Looks like your appโ€™s own font, slanted You want italics to read as emphasis, not as decoration. The best default for social posts.
Italic Serif ๐‘†๐‘’๐‘’ ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ Bookish, like a printed novel Titles, quotations, a literary or formal mood. Mind the โ„Ž.
Bold Italic Serif ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฎ๐’“๐’†๐’‚๐’• ๐‘ฎ๐’‚๐’•๐’”๐’ƒ๐’š Strong and classic A title you want to be seen as well as marked.
Bold Italic Sans ๐™ƒ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ Fast, sporty Short callouts. Too heavy for a full sentence.

Thereโ€™s also a subtle difference in the letter shapes. In most fonts, serif italic switches to a single-storey ๐‘Ž and ๐‘”, the way a true italic typeface does, while sans italic often keeps the upright shapes and simply leans them (๐˜ข๐˜จ). Thatโ€™s the difference between a true italic and an oblique, and itโ€™s why serif italic feels more like handwriting and sans italic more like a slanted version of normal text.

Italic is a slant, cursive is a script

People often use โ€œitalicโ€ and โ€œcursiveโ€ interchangeably, but they are different things in type and in Unicode:

Italic Cursive (script)
Shape Ordinary letters, slanted Looped, joined-looking letters based on handwriting
Readability in a sentence Close to normal text Tiring after a few words
Typical use Emphasis, titles, quotes Names, headings, decorative lines

If you came here for something elegant and loopy for a name or a bio header, the cursive text generator is the better tool. Italic is the one to use when you want a sentence to stay easy to read while still being set apart.

When italics are the right choice

Italics have well-established jobs in writing, and they translate directly to captions and posts:

  1. Titles of long works. Style guides such as Chicago and MLA italicize books, films, albums, TV series and magazines: โ€œFinally reading ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘๐‘ฆ-๐ท๐‘–๐‘๐‘˜โ€, โ€œAlbum of the year: ๐‘€๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘›๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘ โ€. Short works such as songs and articles traditionally go in quotation marks instead.
  2. Stress on one word. โ€œI said ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ cake.โ€ Italics change how a sentence sounds in the readerโ€™s head without shouting the way bold does.
  3. Inner voice and quoted thoughts. Common in fan fiction posted to social media, and in captions: ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ต ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ.
  4. Foreign words and phrases. Words not yet absorbed into English are often italicized: a little
  5. Scientific names. Genus and species are always italic: ๐ป๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘œ ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘–๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ . Handy for nature and gardening accounts.
  6. Quotes and credits. An italic quotation with a plain-text attribution underneath reads cleanly in a caption.

Whatever the job, keep italics short. A single italic sentence reads easily; an italic paragraph loses the contrast that made it useful.

Italic in captions, bios and names

On Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn, pasted italics do most of their work in three places:

  • A pull quote at the top of a caption. Set the quote in italic sans and the credit in plain text on the next line, so the name stays searchable:

Name of the person you are quoting

  • A one-line bio tagline under a plain name, such as Italic reads as a softer voice than the name above it.
  • A display name accent. Italicising only a surname or a nickname keeps the name legible while giving it some character.

Italic also pairs well with bold for a two-level hierarchy without changing typeface: a ๐—•๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€ heading over an ๐˜๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด subtitle looks deliberate because both come from the same sans-serif family. Mixing a serif italic with a sans bold, by contrast, tends to look accidental. The Instagram fonts, TikTok fonts and LinkedIn fonts pages show which fields accept styled text.

Native italics, app by app

Where an app has real italics, use them. Real formatting doesnโ€™t change the characters, so it stays searchable, copyable and readable by screen readers.

App or field Real italics? How
WhatsApp messages Yes _italic_
Discord messages Yes *italic* or _italic_; ***bold italic***
Telegram Yes Select text, then Italic; Ctrl/Cmd + I on desktop
Slack Yes _italic_ or Ctrl/Cmd + I
Reddit, GitHub, Markdown editors Yes *italic*
Word, Google Docs, Gmail Yes Ctrl/Cmd + I
Instagram captions, bios, comments No Paste Unicode italic
TikTok bio and captions No Paste Unicode italic
LinkedIn feed posts No (articles have it) Paste Unicode italic
X posts (most accounts) No Paste Unicode italic
Any display name No Paste Unicode italic

Real italics never work in profile names on any of these apps, so thatโ€™s where pasted italic letters have no substitute.

What to know before you paste

  • No italic numbers. Unicode has no italic digits, so โ€œ๐ถโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ 3โ€ keeps an upright 3. Itโ€™s usually fine.
  • Screen readers struggle. Italic letters may be announced as โ€œmathematical italic small tโ€ one by one, or skipped. Keep important words plain.
  • Search may miss it. Unicodeโ€™s compatibility normalization (NFKC) maps every italic letter, including โ„Ž, back to plain text, but platforms donโ€™t say whether their search uses it. Treat italic words as unsearchable.

To undo italics, paste the text into the fancy text to normal converter. If youโ€™re curious why these letters exist in the first place, our explainer on how fancy text works walks through the mathematical alphabets, and the bold text generator covers the heavier sibling styles, including bold digits.

Keep italics to a line or a single word and this italic text generator will do what real italics do: set something apart without making it harder to read.

Frequently asked questions

Basics

Is italic the same as cursive?
No. Italic is a slanted version of ordinary letters, sometimes with simpler shapes such as a single-storey a. Cursive, or script, uses looped, flowing letterforms modelled on handwriting. ๐ป๐‘’๐‘™๐‘™๐‘œ is italic; ๐“—๐“ฎ๐“ต๐“ต๐“ธ is cursive. If you want loops, use the cursive text generator.
Which italic style should I choose, sans or serif?
Choose Italic Sans for most posts, because it looks like your app's own font, leaned over. Choose Italic Serif for titles and quotations, where a bookish feel suits. Serif italic borrows a different symbol for the letter h, so words with many h's can look uneven on some devices.

Where it works

How do I italicize text on Instagram?
Instagram has no italic button in captions, bios or comments. Type your text above, copy the italic version, and paste it into Instagram. Italic letters are not accepted in your @username, which only allows letters, numbers, periods and underscores. See our Instagram fonts page for the rules in each field.
How do I type italics in WhatsApp or Discord?
Both have real italics, which are better for messages. In WhatsApp, put underscores around the words: like this. In Discord, use single asterisks or underscores: like this. Real formatting reads normally with screen readers. Pasted italic letters remain useful where formatting doesn't work, such as a Discord display name or a WhatsApp status line.
Can I use italic text on LinkedIn?
Yes. Feed posts have no italic button (LinkedIn articles do), so paste Italic Sans there for a quoted line or a book title and keep key words in plain text so search can find them. Pasted italics are not meant for your profile headline if it must stay searchable.
Does italic text work in an Instagram bio or TikTok bio?
Yes. Both bios accept pasted Unicode italic, and a short tagline under a plain name is the common use. It will not work in the @username on either app. Keep the tagline short, because a long italic bio loses the contrast that makes italic useful.

How it works

Why does the letter h look different in italic text?
In the serif italic style, lowercase h is not a mathematical italic letter at all. It's โ„Ž, U+210E PLANCK CONSTANT, from the older Letterlike Symbols block. Unicode left a hole where the italic h would be and points to that symbol instead. Many fonts draw it a little differently. Sans italic (๐˜ฉ) and bold italic (๐’‰) have no such gap.
Is Unicode italic a real italic font?
No. It is a set of separate slanted characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, not a font style applied to normal letters. Because of that, italic text pastes into plain-text boxes, but it is also a different string from the plain word, which affects search and screen readers.
Does italic text show on every device?
On current phones, tablets and computers it should. The italic alphabets are part of standard Unicode, so there is no font to install. Very old software or a restricted app may show boxes instead; if so, read why fancy text shows boxes for the fixes.

Tips & limits

Can I make italic numbers?
No. Unicode has bold, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace digits, but no italic or bold italic digits. Any numbers you type into an italic style stay upright. If a number needs emphasis next to italic words, bold digits (๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”) are the closest match, or simply leave it plain.
Do italic letters count as two characters on X?
Yes. Italic letters are in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, far above U+1100, so X counts each one as two characters. The โ„Ž in serif italic counts as two as well. Spaces and plain punctuation still count as one, so a fully italic post fits roughly 140 to 160 letters depending on how many spaces it has.
Is italic text hard for screen readers?
Yes, it can be. Italic letters may be read out one by one as "mathematical italic small t", or skipped. A single italic word is a small cost, but a whole italic caption can be unreadable to blind followers. Keep names, links and key information in plain text. See the accessibility guide.
How do I turn italic Unicode text back into normal text?
Paste it into the fancy text to normal converter. It maps each italic letter, including the borrowed โ„Ž, back to its plain equivalent, so you can edit or search the text. It also keeps your line breaks and emoji, which retyping a long caption would not.
