Key facts
- There is no connected cursive for digits: cursive joins letters, but numerals are written one at a time.
- Unicode has script letters but no script or cursive digits, so copy-and-paste cursive numbers are really bold, double-struck, monospace or circled digit sets.
- An open 4 leaves the top open and is quicker to write, while a closed 4 forms a triangle and is harder to misread.
- A crossed 7 is standard in much of continental Europe and Latin America, where the cross keeps it distinct from a 1 with a long flag.
- Write dates with the month as a word, such as "October 3, 2026", because numeric dates mean different things in different countries.
- On cheques, write the amount in words and numerals, close the 0, 6, 8 and 9, and draw a line through unused space on the amount line.
Cursive numbers are not joined
When people search for โcursive numbersโ they usually mean one of three things: the numerals as taught alongside cursive handwriting, a printable chart of 0 to 9, or a number style to copy into a design. This page covers all three.
A first fact that surprises many: there is no connected cursive for digits. Cursive handwriting joins letters, but numerals are separate shapes. In school handwriting models (Zaner-Bloser, DโNealian, Palmer and others) the digits are taught as upright or lightly slanted figures that sit on the baseline and reach the top line. The charm of cursive numbers is that they share the rhythm of cursive letters, with rounded, flowing forms rather than the stiff geometry of print.
How do you write each digit in cursive?
The forms vary a little between school models. These are the commonly taught shapes, each starting at the top unless noted.
| Digit | Stroke | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Start just right of the top centre, curve counter-clockwise down and around, close at the top | Close it fully, or it reads as a 6 |
| 1 | Short slanted flag down to the left, then a straight downstroke | With or without a base; with a flag it is less likely to look like a lowercase l |
| 2 | Curve over the top to the right, sweep down and left, then a straight or looped base | A looped base is faster; a straight base is clearer |
| 3 | Curve right and in, curve right again below, ending in an open hook | Round top, not flat. A flat-topped 3 looks like a Z |
| 4 | Down-left diagonal, across to the right, then a vertical stroke that crosses it | Open top is faster, closed is clearer |
| 5 | Vertical stroke down, a bowl to the right, then lift to add the flat top bar | Add the bar last, as a separate quick stroke |
| 6 | Curve down and left from the top into a closed bowl at the bottom | Close the loop at the stem so it does not read as an open 0 |
| 7 | A short top bar then a diagonal down to the left | Optionally cross the stem, see below |
| 8 | Start at the top right, make an S down to the left, then close back up | Do it as two loops in one movement, not two stacked circles |
| 9 | A closed bowl at the top, then a tail straight or curved down | Tail should drop below the baseline in some models |
Where do school models disagree?
Is a cursive 4 open or closed?
A closed 4 forms a triangle at the top before the vertical line comes down. An open 4 leaves the top open, so the vertical stroke is separate. Neither is wrong; the open version is quicker, the closed version harder to misread.
How is the 1 written?
In North American models the 1 has a small flag at the top and no base. In some European models the flag is long, which is why the 7 gets a crossbar there, to keep it distinct from the 1.
Why is the 7 crossed?
A short horizontal bar through the stem of the 7 is standard in much of continental Europe and Latin America. If you write a 7 that you want read quickly by an international audience, crossing it is harmless.
How do I write numbers on cards, dates and cheques?
Dates
The unambiguous format is month as a word: โOctober 3, 2026โ. For a formal letter use โ3 October 2026โ or โOctober 3, 2026โ, whichever your locale uses. Numeric dates such as 03/10/26 mean different things in different countries.
Addresses
Write the house number on the same baseline as the street name and leave a clear space before the street. Avoid joining digits to letters: a โ4โ next to โaโ invites a misread.
Cheques
Write the amount in words and numerals. Make digits clear and separate, close the 0, 6, 8 and 9, and consider crossing the 7 and closing the 4. Write the fractional part with a dash or small superscript, depending on the cheque layout, and draw a line through any unused space on the amount line to prevent additions.
Cards and invitations
A fussy script number can look decorative but reads poorly at a glance. Use a larger, simpler form for the year or an age (โ21โ, โ50โ) and keep the loops open.
Cursive-style numbers for tattoos and designs
For tattoos, designers usually choose a script or old-style numeral set from a font, then redraw it. The right way to preview this is with a font image, not copied Unicode. Our tattoo font generator renders numbers in script and other lettering fonts as an image, and is a way to take a stencil idea to an artist, not a finished stencil. Always have the artist review spacing and line thickness for skin, because fine hairline strokes blur over the years.
Can you copy and paste cursive-style digits?
Unicode includes mathematical script letters (๐, ๐ช) but no script or cursive digits. The numerals you see in โcursive numberโ copy-paste tools are other Unicode digit sets: bold (๐๐๐), double-struck (๐๐๐), monospace (๐ท๐ธ๐น), circled and others. They look clean, but none is a cursive shape.
If you want a flowing look, use letters from the cursive text generator for the words and pick a number style from the number font generator for the digits. If you want to practise cursive numerals by hand, use the chart of 0 to 9 above, three rows per digit, then write a date, a phone number and a short sum from memory. Repeating that routine is the surest way to make your cursive numbers fast and clear.
