Key facts
- CS2 shows your Steam profile name in matches; Steamworks caps it at 32 UTF-16 code units and 128 UTF-8 bytes.
- Bold, gothic, cursive and other math-alphabet letters cost two UTF-16 units each, so a fully styled CS2 Steam name holds about 16 letters.
- The CS2 weapon name tag box is set to 20 characters in Valve's own client script, mirrored by SteamDB; allowed characters are checked on Valve's servers and not published.
- Fancy Unicode is often reported as rejected on CS2 name tags, so plan on plain letters and numbers there and keep the styled version in your Steam name.
- CS2 draws names with its own font, so a Steam name that looks right on Steam can show boxes on the scoreboard or in the kill feed.
- The Steam profile summary is a free-text field where pasted Unicode generally displays, which makes it a safer home for a decorative version of your CS2 name.
Where fancy letters work on Counter-Strike 2 (Steam)
Each Counter-Strike 2 (Steam) profile field has its own rules. Open Compatibility & details on any style above to see whether your text fits.
- Steam profile name (shown in match)Partly
Limit: 32 chars
CS2 shows your Steam profile name. Steamworks caps it at 32 UTF-16 code units and 128 UTF-8 bytes, so bold, gothic and other math-alphabet letters (2 units each) fit about 16 to a name. Fonts in game may not include every symbol.
- Weapon name tagNo
Limit: 20 chars
Up to 20 characters: Valve's own game script sets the name tag box to 20. Which characters are allowed is checked on Valve's servers and no list is published; fancy Unicode is often reported as rejected, so expect plain text.
- In-game text chatPartly
Chat is drawn by the game font and filtered by Steam or the server. Styled letters may show as boxes. Unverified.
- Steam profile summaryYes
A free-text field where pasted Unicode generally displays. Use it for the decorative version of your name.

This CS2 name style generator turns your Steam profile name into small caps, bold sans and other Unicode styles you can copy, with the character count of each. It is for Counter-Strike 2 players who want a styled scoreboard name and need to know how the 32-unit Steam limit works.
Two different names in CS2
Counter-Strike 2 has two places where text identifies you, and they follow different rules. The first is your Steam profile name, which the game shows on the scoreboard, in the kill feed and in lobbies. That name is set in Steam, and it accepts Unicode, so styled text is possible. The second is the name tag, an item you can apply to a weapon, which has its own length and character limit and goes through a stricter filter.
The Steam name limit comes from Valve’s Steamworks documentation: 32 UTF-16 code units and 128 UTF-8 bytes. Plain letters cost one unit each, but bold, gothic, cursive and other math-alphabet letters cost two, so a fully styled name holds about 16 letters. The 20-character name tag limit comes from the game itself: CS2’s script for the name tag screen sets the text box to 20 characters. Valve checks the allowed characters on its servers and publishes no list, so that part is still unverified.
| Where | Who sets it | Fancy Unicode | Reported limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scoreboard and kill feed | Your Steam profile name | Sometimes, game font permitting | 32 UTF-16 units (about 16 styled letters) |
| Weapon name tag | The item screen | Usually not accepted; allowed characters unpublished | 20 (CS2 client script) |
| Steam profile summary | Steam | Yes | Not verified |
| In-game chat | The game and server | Inconsistent | Not verified |
Choosing a Steam name that survives the game font
A name that looks good on Steam can be drawn with boxes in a match, because the game uses its own font, which may not include every character. Choose in this order of safety:
- Plain letters with a capital pattern, such as “GhostStrike”.
- Small caps, which are letter-like and often available.
- Bold sans and monospace, math letters that depend on font coverage.
- Gothic, outlines and glitch, the most likely to show boxes.
Test by joining a casual match and checking the scoreboard. Ask a teammate to read your name aloud. If they hesitate, simplify.
Name tags
Name tags are bought for a weapon and then permanently apply their text. The filter and the length limit are strict, and rejected text may cost you the chance to try again, so type the tag carefully. The safest approach is plain letters, numbers and standard punctuation, without Unicode styling. If you want a fancy tag, test the style in the text field before purchasing, and be prepared for a refusal. Do not spend on a tag until you are sure the text is accepted.
A good tag is short, readable at the angle of the viewmodel, and not likely to bore you in a month. Names, nicknames, initials and in-jokes all work. Avoid anything that could be filtered as offensive.
Practical length
Most people read the first eight to twelve characters of a name on a scoreboard. Put your core word first, and avoid brackets or tags before it, because they push the real name to the end where it may be clipped. In a voice-chat team game, a name that can be said in one breath helps.
Match rules and fair use
Valve and server operators may remove names that are offensive or impersonate others. Do not use styling to hide words from a filter or copy someone else’s name. Competitive and third-party services often enforce their own rules, and a name that works in casual play may be changed or rejected elsewhere.
Keeping a plain fallback
Teammates look you up in Steam by typing a name or using a friend code or profile link. A styled name is hard to type. Share the profile link or the plain version for adding friends, and use the styled version only for appearance. See Steam fonts for how profile and account names differ.
Accessibility
Players with screen readers or low vision may not read decorative names correctly, and mathematical letters are read as unusual symbol names. A moderate style helps everyone. Read the guide to why fancy text shows boxes for the font side of this.
How to use the CS2 name style generator
- Type your name in the box.
- Compare styles at small size.
- Copy the one you like.
- In Steam, edit your profile name and paste it in.
- Join a match and check the scoreboard.
Nothing you type leaves your browser. For another Valve and Riot comparison, see Valorant name style, which has similar notes for a different tactical shooter.
Examples of styles by situation
| Situation | Suggested style | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Casual and premier matches | Plain or small caps | Reads clearly on the scoreboard |
| Streaming or clips | Bold sans or small caps | Holds up after video compression |
| Steam profile page | Any style you like | Steam draws Unicode well |
| Weapon name tag | Plain text | Stricter filter on the item screen |
| Discord and socials | Any style | Unicode is widely accepted |
A useful habit is to keep two versions of your name: a short plain one for the game and a longer decorative one for places where fancy letters are safe. Update both when you rebrand, so friends can always connect your profiles. If you stream, put the plain in-game name in your channel description so viewers can find and add you.
Finally, avoid including numbers that look like dates of birth or other personal details. A public scoreboard name is visible to everyone in the match, and some servers record names in public logs and statistics pages, so treat it as public information.
The cs2 name style generator is best for your Steam name; keep weapon name tags plain and test a style in a casual match before you rely on it.
