Key facts
- A mirror text generator replaces each letter with a look-alike facing the other way and reverses the order, so the line reads correctly when held up to a mirror.
- Mirror reflects letters and reverses the order; Mirror Letters reflects each letter but keeps the order, so it is a typographic effect that never reads correctly.
- Lowercase n, y and z have no mirrored character in Unicode and stay as they are, and digits are never mirrored, only reordered: 2024 becomes 4202.
- Short capitalised words mirror best: AMBULANCE gives ƎƆИA⅃UᙠMA, a close match to the reflected lettering on an ambulance hood.
- Mirrored letters do not fold back to plain text and the converter does not recognise them, so keep your original wording in a note.
- A few mirrored letters come from Cherokee, Georgian and Canadian syllabics and may show as boxes on older phones.
This mirror text generator flips whatever you type left to right, such as ЯOЯЯIM, so it reads correctly in a mirror. It offers a true reflection that reverses the order and a version that keeps the order. Copy a result and paste it into a bio, caption or display name.
How to use the mirror text generator
- Type your text in the box at the top. Short capitalised words mirror best.
- Pick Mirror for a true reflection with the order reversed, or Mirror Letters to keep the word in place.
- Tap Copy and paste it into your bio, caption or display name.
Mirror text in one line
A mirror turns left into right. Mirror text imitates that: every letter is replaced by a look-alike that faces the other way, and the order of the letters is reversed, so the last letter comes first. Held up to a mirror, the result reads normally.
Here is the same phrase in each of the common “flipped” styles:
| Style | Result for “Happy Birthday” | What changes | Reads correctly when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirror | yɒbʜƚɿiᙠ yqqɒH | Each letter reflected left to right, order reversed | Held up to a mirror |
| Mirror Letters | Hɒqqy ᙠiɿƚʜbɒy | Each letter reflected, order kept | Never: it is a typographic effect only |
| Reverse | yadhtriB yppaH | Only the order reversed | Read right to left |
| Upside down | ʎɐpɥʇɹᴉꓭ ʎddɐH | Each letter rotated 180°, order reversed | You turn the screen upside down |
Mirror and upside down are easy to mix up. Mirror reflects, upside down rotates, and the difference matters for letters like b and d: a mirror turns b into d, but a 180° rotation turns b into q. Our upside down text generator covers rotation and plain reverse text.
How the mirror map works
Unicode has no “flip” setting. The text is stored left to right, and a mirror effect is built in two steps:
- Substitute. Each letter is swapped for a character that looks like its reflection: b ↔ d, p ↔ q, E → Ǝ, R → Я, S → Ƨ.
- Reverse. For the Mirror style, the order of the characters is reversed, so a word starts where a mirror would show its first letter. Mirror Letters skips this step.
The reflected look-alikes are borrowed from many places:
| Letter | Becomes | Unicode name | Original purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | ɒ | Latin small letter turned alpha | Phonetic symbol (IPA) |
| e | ɘ | Latin small letter reversed e | Phonetic symbol (IPA) |
| r | ɿ | Latin small letter reversed r with fishhook | Phonetic symbol (IPA) |
| s | ƨ | Latin small letter tone two | Tone letter |
| E | Ǝ | Latin capital letter reversed E | Phonetic and African languages |
| F | ꟻ | Latin epigraphic letter reversed F | Inscriptions and epigraphy |
| P | ꟼ | Latin epigraphic letter reversed P | Inscriptions and epigraphy |
| L | ⅃ | Reversed sans-serif capital L | Letterlike symbol |
| R | Я | Cyrillic capital letter Ya | Russian alphabet |
| N | И | Cyrillic capital letter I | Russian alphabet |
| B | ᙠ | Canadian syllabics Carrier tsa | Writing system for Dakelh (Carrier) |
| D | ᗡ | Canadian syllabics Carrier tha | Writing system for Dakelh (Carrier) |
None of them was designed to be a mirrored Latin letter. They were picked because the shapes happen to line up.
Letters with no true mirror image
The mirror map is the weakest of the flip styles, and it is better to know where.
- Left alone because they are symmetrical. A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y, and lowercase i, l, m, o, u, v, w and x, look the same in a mirror, so nothing needs swapping.
- Left alone because no mirrored character exists. Lowercase n, y and z have no reflected form in Unicode, so they stay as they are. A word like zany, with its z, n and y, comes out only half mirrored.
- Digits are not mirrored. Numbers keep their shapes; only their order reverses. So 2024 becomes 4202 in the Mirror style, not a true reflection.
- Close, but not exact. Some letters use a nearby character that is not a true reflection: f → ʇ (turned t), g → ǫ (o with ogonek), h → ʜ (small capital H), j → į (i with ogonek), k → ʞ (turned k, which is rotated), t → ƚ (l with bar). Capital K → ⋊ is a mathematical symbol, J → Ⴑ is Georgian, G → Ꭾ is Cherokee and Q → Ϙ is an archaic Greek koppa. Expect these to look fine at a glance and slightly wrong on a close look.
- Punctuation. Only ? ( ) [ ] { } < > are mirrored (? becomes ⸮, and brackets swap sides). Other marks stay put.
- Accented letters, emoji and other scripts are not mirrored and keep their reversed positions.
The practical tip: short, capitalised words mirror best. AMBULANCE gives ƎƆИA⅃UᙠMA, a close match to the reflected lettering on an ambulance hood, while a long lowercase sentence with plenty of n, y and z reads as half-mirrored.
Mirror text, reverse text and mirror writing
Mirror text (what this page makes) is a copy-and-paste effect built from Unicode characters. It is meant to be looked at, and it will not behave like handwritten mirror writing.
Mirror writing is a handwriting technique: writing from right to left with letters reversed, so the page reads in a mirror. Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks are the best-known example. If you want to try it yourself, write a line normally, then practise it again with a pencil in your other hand and a mirror beside the page.
Reverse text reverses only the order of the letters: mirror becomes rorrim. It uses ordinary letters, so it works everywhere. For reverse and upside down, use the upside down text generator.
If you need a genuinely mirrored image, for an iron-on transfer, a window sticker or a sign, a text generator is the wrong tool. Create the artwork in an image editor and use its flip horizontal command, or tick “mirror image” in the print dialog.
Before you post mirrored text
- Screen readers cannot read it. They announce characters by name (“Latin small letter turned alpha”) and in the stored, backwards order. Our accessibility guide explains the effect. Use mirror text for decoration, and add the message in plain text when it matters.
- Search will not find it. Mirrored letters do not fold back to plain letters, so the words cannot be matched by a search box.
- A few characters may show as boxes. The Cherokee, Georgian and Canadian syllabics characters in the table need fonts that older phones can lack. See why fancy text shows boxes.
- Display names yes, usernames no. Mirrored text works where Unicode is accepted, such as bios, captions and display names.
Mirror text mixes well with other playful styles. A line of glitch text underneath can make it look broken on purpose.
Turn it back to normal
There is no one-click undo for mirrored letters. The fancy text to normal converter handles bold, cursive and upside-down text, but not the mirror map, so keep your original wording in a note. To decode a mirrored line by hand, read it from right to left and swap each unusual character back using the table above. For plain reversed text, run it through the Reversed style on the upside down text page: reversing twice restores the original.
Use the mirror text generator for short, capitalised, decorative words, and keep a plain copy of anything you will need to read or search for later.

- Fancy Text and Screen Readers: What Happens and What to DoAre fancy fonts accessible? Mostly not: styled Unicode letters are separate characters, so screen readers may read long character names or skip them.
