T in Bubble Letters

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
Bubble T is one of the simplest capitals, a horizontal capsule on top of a vertical one, and still gets drawn badly because of balance. The crossbar and stem must feel like one inflated piece, not two sausages stacked. Lowercase t is more interesting: it is shorter than other tall letters, has a cross that sits well below its top, and often a curved foot.

How to draw a bubble capital T
- 1Draw guidelines for top and baseline, then a thin skeleton of one horizontal bar on the top line and a vertical stem that drops from its centre to the baseline.
- 2Inflate the crossbar as a long capsule with round ends, leaving it as thick as the stem and extending the same distance on each side of it.
- 3Inflate the stem as a capsule that begins inside the crossbar and ends with a rounded foot on the baseline.
- 4Round the two inner corners where the underside of the crossbar meets the stem into soft curves, instead of leaving sharp right angles.
- 5Erase the overlap between the two shapes, then re-ink the outer outline so the T reads as one balloon.
Tip: Make the crossbar about one and a half times as wide as the stem is tall in thickness terms, that is, let it overhang each side by roughly one stem width. Shorter than that and the T looks stubby, longer and it feels like a table.
How to draw a bubble lowercase t
- 1Draw x-height, baseline and ascender guides. Lowercase t's stem will rise to about halfway between the x-height and the ascender line.
- 2Pencil a thin vertical stem from that height down to the baseline, and a short horizontal bar crossing it at x-height.
- 3Inflate the stem as a capsule with a rounded top, then add a small curve at the bottom that turns right like a gentle foot.
- 4Inflate the crossbar as a short thick capsule extending a little more to the right than the left, as in most typefaces.
- 5Erase the overlaps and round the inner corners, so both sides of the cross have a soft dent where bar meets stem.
Tip: Do not make lowercase t as tall as an l or h. A shorter stem keeps the letter's distinctive proportion, and it avoids clashing with ascenders in neighbouring letters.
What makes T awkward or easy
Capital T has no curves to hide in, so any imbalance between crossbar and stem shows immediately. The crossbar's underside creates two inner corners, and those corners should be soft, not sharp, to keep the inflated feel. Lowercase t has its own difficulty, the cross: it is a short bar through a stem, so the outline creates four tiny arms. If the bar is too long or too thin, the t looks like a plus sign or a small cross.
Variations
A bubble T with a very wide crossbar looks like a street sign and works for retro lettering. Slanting both parts gives a speedy graffiti T. A cross-shaped lowercase t can double as a plus or a small cross in themed designs. For 3D, extrude downwards from the crossbar so its shadow lands on the stem. Kid-friendly T can be coloured as a tree, with the crossbar as the canopy.
Common mistakes with bubble T
The crossbar is thinner than the stem, so the T seems to hang off the stem.
Set the same outline distance for both bars, then check each against your pencil tip before inking.
The stem is off centre, so the T leans.
Mark the midpoint of the crossbar with a faint tick before drawing the stem and let the stem sit exactly under it.
Lowercase t is as tall as an l.
End the stem about halfway between the x-height and ascender lines, which keeps the t compact and distinct.
Sharp inside corners make the letter look like cut metal.
Round each inner corner with a small curve whose radius is about half the bar thickness.
Ideas for bubble T
T is great for names like Tara, Theo and Tina, words such as 'Team', 'Tea' and 'Thanks', and as a cross-like motif in lowercase on notes and stickers. Its flat top also gives space for a small decoration, like a bow, a crown or a drip of icing. In school settings, T is one of the first capitals taught because of its two simple strokes.

Bubble T you can copy and paste
T has copy-paste circled forms: the capital Ⓣ, the lowercase ⓣ and the black-circled capital 🅣. They are single Unicode characters for text, and cannot be recoloured or resized separately from the text around them. If you want a crossbar with exactly the right overhang, or a tall t with a custom foot, draw it. Use the symbols when you need quick decoration in a message.
