Z in Bubble Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital Z
Lowercase z

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

Bubble Z is a zigzag of three capsules: a top bar, a diagonal and a bottom bar. Its challenge is the two corners, where straight sharp ends meet at an angle and tend to leave jagged slivers or a pinched waist. Round them, keep all three bars equally thick and the Z becomes one of the easiest, most graphic letters in the alphabet.

How to draw a bubble capital Z

  1. 1Draw top and baseline guides. Pencil a thin skeleton as a Z: a horizontal line on the top guide, a diagonal from its right end to the left end of the baseline, and a horizontal line along the baseline.
  2. 2Inflate the top bar as a long capsule with rounded ends, reaching from the left edge to the right edge of the letter.
  3. 3Inflate the bottom bar in the same way, matching the top bar's length and thickness.
  4. 4Inflate the diagonal as a capsule whose ends tuck into the right end of the top bar and the left end of the bottom bar.
  5. 5Round the two inside corners where the diagonal meets the bars into soft curves, and erase the overlapping lines.

Tip: Make the diagonal about a tenth thicker than the bars. Slanted strokes look thinner than horizontal ones, and the thicker diagonal balances the letter.

How to draw a bubble lowercase z

  1. 1Draw x-height and baseline guides and pencil a thin Z between them. Lowercase z is simply a smaller version, with the same shape.
  2. 2Make the bars a little shorter than the capital's bars relative to height, so the z does not look stretched.
  3. 3Inflate the top and bottom bars as capsules, then the diagonal as a thicker capsule joining them.
  4. 4Merge the three shapes by rounding the inside corners and erasing lines through the junctions.
  5. 5Check that the gaps above and below the diagonal are open, equal in size, and rounded at the back.

Tip: At small sizes, lowercase z fills in quickly. Leave the two inside gaps a little wider than looks necessary so they stay visible after inking and colouring.

What makes Z awkward or easy

Z has only straight parts, so the bubble look must come from rounding. The two outer corners, top left and bottom right, become round ends, while the two inner corners, where the diagonal touches the bars, become smooth dents. The most common problem is the diagonal's thickness. It tapers when drawn from a single line, which makes the middle look thin. Another hazard is the top and bottom bars drifting out of parallel, which makes the Z lean even when the diagonal is straight.

Variations

A slanted Z looks like a lightning bolt and suits sports lettering. Add a drop shadow under the bottom bar for a floating effect. A very wide Z with short arms is a retro look, and a narrow, tall Z feels more modern. Kid-friendly Z can be drawn as a snake that folds in the middle. Outline-only Z gives three clear areas for colouring, which makes it an easy first practice letter.

Common mistakes with bubble Z

  • The diagonal tapers in the middle and the Z looks pinched.

Draw the diagonal as two parallel lines before rounding the ends, and keep the distance constant for its whole length.

  • The top and bottom bars are different lengths, so the Z leans.

Mark left and right limits with vertical guidelines and let both bars touch them.

  • Sharp slivers remain where the diagonal meets each bar.

Round both inner corners with a curve about half the bar thickness, and fill leftover slivers with the letter's colour.

  • The Z is drawn too narrow, so the gaps close.

Widen the letter until each gap can hold at least one finger-width of paper.

Ideas for bubble Z

Z is dramatic for names like Zoe, Zain and Zara, for 'Zoo', 'Zen' and 'Zzz' in sleeping scenes, and for the end of an A to Z display. Lightning-bolt Zs are common in sports and superhero designs. In the classroom, Z makes a good last letter to finish a full bubble alphabet poster.

Bubble Z you can copy and paste

Z has copy-paste forms: the circled capital Ⓩ, the circled lowercase ⓩ and the black-circled capital 🅩. They are Unicode characters for text, so you can paste them into a bio or message but cannot round their corners or recolour them. Use the symbols for quick decoration. For a thick, rounded Z you can print or colour, draw it by hand using the steps above.

Bubble Z: questions

Why does my bubble Z look jagged?
The corners are still sharp. Round the outer corners into half-circle ends and the inner corners into smooth dents, using the same radius everywhere. Also check that the diagonal is as thick as the bars, because a thin diagonal makes the joins look jagged.
Is Z the easiest bubble letter?
It is among the easier ones, because it is made of three straight capsules and has no counters. L, I and T are similar. The only tricky parts are keeping the diagonal thick and rounding the corners, so it makes a good practice letter after the simplest shapes.
How do I make a bubble Z look like lightning?
Slant the letter to the right, shorten the bars, make the diagonal steeper and let the corners be a little sharper than other letters. Colour it yellow with an orange shadow. Keep rounded ends if you want it to stay in bubble style.
Are circled Z symbols the same as the sleep Zzz?
No. Ⓩ, ⓩ and 🅩 are letter symbols inside circles. The sleeping Zzz is just plain z letters, sometimes with an emoji. If you want a sleep effect in text, repeat lowercase z or use the sleeping face emoji instead of circled forms.
