How to Write 1 in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Digit 1 in Playwrite US Trad (traditional school cursive).

A cursive 1 is only two movements, a short flag and a straight stem, which is why small differences matter so much. The flag is what makes it a 1 and not a vertical stroke, and its length is the habit that separates most American from many European hands. Written well, it sits on the baseline, reaches the top line and looks different from the loop of a cursive l.

How to write 1

Start: At the top line, a little right of where the stem will fall.

  1. 1Start at the top line and make a short slanted stroke down and to the left. This is the flag.
  2. 2Without lifting, turn and pull a straight line down to the baseline, leaning the same way as your letters.
  3. 3Stop on the baseline. Most American models do not add a foot or base.
  4. 4If your model uses one, lift and add a short horizontal base, centred on the stem.
  5. 5Leave a clear gap before the next digit; do not join.

Variations between schools and countries

D'Nealian and Zaner-Bloser teach a short flag and a plain stem. Many European models (French, German, Spanish and others) draw a long flag, nearly as long as the stem, and write 7 with a bar through it to avoid confusion. Some hands add a base serif on the 1 for the same reason, most often on forms and in ledgers. A 1 written as a single vertical stroke, like the numeral I, is accepted in print but risks looking like a lowercase l or a capital I in cursive text.

Common mistakes with 1

  • Writing the 1 as a plain vertical line

Add the little flag at the top. It is the feature that tells readers it is a digit, not an l or an I.

  • Making the flag so long it looks like a 7

Keep the flag to about a third of the stem height, or cross your 7 to tell them apart.

  • Looping the top like a cursive l

A 1 has a sharp angle at the top, not a loop. Stop and change direction instead of curving round.

  • Leaning the stem against the slant of your letters

Slant the stem as you do the rest of your writing so a date or address looks even.

Where you will write 1

The 1 shows up in every date and address, and it is the digit most likely to be mistaken for something else: a lowercase l in a postcode, a 7 on a cheque or a 4 in a rushed hand. On cheques, a flag and, if you like, a base makes the 1 unmistakable. For dates, a 1 next to another 1 (11) looks neat when both stems share the same height and slant. In tattoos, 1 is common for birth dates and roman-style numbers, and tattoo artists often pair a long flag with a thin base for a classic look.

Copy-paste styles for 1

Unicode has script letters but no script digits, so no copyable 1 is truly cursive. The styled versions you can paste are bold 𝟏, double-struck 𝟙, monospace 𝟷, circled ①, negative circled ❶, superscript ¹ and subscript ₁. Because 1 can look like l or I, avoid mixing the digit with lowercase l from a script alphabet: 𝓁 is a letter, not a one. To see how a run of ones like 11 or 2111 looks in each style, try it in the number font generator; a handwritten one needs a script font exported as an image.

Cursive 1: questions

How do you write a 1 in cursive?
Start at the top line, draw a short slanted flag down to the left, then pull a straight line down to the baseline. There is no loop and, in most American models, no base. The stem leans the same way as the rest of your handwriting. Keep the flag short enough that the 1 does not look like a 7.
Should a cursive 1 have a base?
It is optional. US school models usually teach a 1 without a base, while many European hands add one to stop it being read as a 7 or an l. If you write on forms, cheques or labels where clarity matters, adding a short base is harmless and makes the digit more distinct.
Why does my 1 look like a lowercase l?
Because the flag is too small or missing, or the top is looped. A cursive l is a tall loop; a 1 is an angular flag and a straight stem. Make the flag a clear diagonal, and keep the 1 a little shorter than a loop letter if you can.
Is there a cursive 1 I can copy and paste?
Not a real script one. Unicode has no script digits, so the numbers on cursive generators are other styles, such as bold 𝟏, double-struck 𝟙 or circled ①. A script-style 1 can only be shown as an image made with a handwriting font.
