How to Write 5 in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Digit 5 in Playwrite US Trad (traditional school cursive).

The cursive 5 is written in two movements: a stem with a bowl, then a short bar across the top. That top bar is added last, like crossing a t, and writers who add it too early or leave it off turn the 5 into an S. Getting the bowl round and the bar flat is most of the work.

How to write 5

Start: Just below the top line, left of centre, where the stem begins.

  1. 1Start just below the top line and draw a short, nearly vertical stem down to about the midline.
  2. 2Without lifting, curve out to the right into a rounded bowl and round the bottom.
  3. 3Finish the bowl by curving back toward the left, ending just above the baseline with an open end.
  4. 4Lift the pen and go back to the top of the stem.
  5. 5Add a short flat bar across the top, starting at the stem and moving to the right.

Variations between schools and countries

Zaner-Bloser teaches a vertical stem, a rounded bowl and a separate top bar. D'Nealian slants the stem a little. A one-stroke 5, which starts at the top bar and flows into the stem and bowl, is common in fast handwriting. In some European hands the top bar hangs slightly down on the right, a small flag. Whatever the order, the bar should be added after the bowl on the slow version, so the bowl is already in place to guide it.

Common mistakes with 5

  • Leaving off the top bar so the 5 looks like an S

Always add the bar. It is the feature that makes a 5 different from an S or a 3.

  • A bar that slopes steeply up or down

Keep it nearly horizontal and short, about as wide as the bowl.

  • A pointed bowl that looks like a 6 or a G

Round the bowl and leave the end open. A closed loop at the bottom would be a 6.

  • A stem that leans away from the rest of the digit

Match the slant of the stem to your letters so the 5 sits upright in a row of numbers.

Where you will write 5

A 5 is the digit most often mistaken for an S or a 6 in addresses, postcodes and registration numbers, so a clear top bar matters. On cheques, writing the bar firmly and keeping the bowl open prevents the 5 from being altered to a 6 or 8. In dates, the 5 is easy to spot in 2025 or the 5th. For tattoos, a script 5 often features a long swash on the top bar.

Copy-paste styles for 5

Unicode has script letters but no script digits, so no copyable 5 is truly cursive. The styled versions you can paste are bold 𝟓, double-struck 𝟝, monospace 𝟻, circled ⑤, negative circled ❺, superscript ⁵ and subscript ₅. Since 5 can look like S, avoid the letter-like styles for digits and stay with bold 𝟓 or circled ⑤ when you need a clearly numeric look. The number font generator lets you preview a 5 inside longer numbers; the swash-topped handwritten 5 has to be made as an image with a script font.

Cursive 5: questions

How do you write a 5 in cursive?
Write a short stem down from the top, curve out into a rounded bowl at the bottom and end with an open tail. Then lift the pen and add a short flat bar at the top. The bar is added last, as you would cross a t. Keep the bowl round and the stem on your slant.
Why is the top bar of a 5 written last?
It is the easier way to keep the bowl round, and it matches how most people write quickly. The bar added last also makes the 5 distinct from an S. Writers who prefer one stroke can start with the bar instead, but the shape should be the same.
How do I stop my 5 looking like an S?
Add a flat top bar and keep the stem fairly straight. An S has no bar and curves from top to bottom. A visible bar and a straight upper stem make the 5 easy to tell apart, even in quick handwriting.
Is there a cursive 5 to copy and paste?
No. Unicode contains no script digits, so a copied 5 is bold 𝟓, double-struck 𝟝, circled ⑤ or another style. To use a cursive-shaped 5, with its separate flag stroke, you need to export it as an image from a script font. Images cannot be selected or read by a screen reader, so keep the plain digit available as text.
