How to Write 7 in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Digit 7 in Playwrite US Trad (traditional school cursive).

A 7 is a bar and a diagonal, and the interesting question is whether to cross the stem. A crossed 7 has a short horizontal stroke through the middle of the diagonal, and it is standard in much of continental Europe and Latin America. It keeps a 7 distinct from a 1 with a long flag, and it is worth knowing both forms because you will read them in handwriting from around the world.

How to write 7

Start: At the top line, on the left, heading right.

  1. 1Start at the top line on the left and draw a horizontal bar to the right, about as wide as the digit.
  2. 2At the right end of the bar, turn and draw a diagonal stroke down and to the left, aiming at a point just left of centre on the baseline.
  3. 3Keep the diagonal straight, or curve it slightly toward the bottom as a gentle sweep.
  4. 4For a crossed 7, lift the pen and add a short horizontal stroke through the middle of the diagonal.
  5. 5Leave a gap before the next digit.

Variations between schools and countries

American models teach a plain 7. In France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Latin America and many other places, a crossed 7 is normal, because their 1 has a long flag and could look like a 7 without the bar. Some hands add a small hook at the left end of the top bar, which is common in older cursive. A curved or wavy diagonal is also taught in a few models, and a 7 with a looped top, common in handwriting for a century ago, is rare today.

Common mistakes with 7

  • A top bar that tilts up or down so the 7 looks like a 1 or a 9

Keep the bar level and a little shorter than the digit is tall.

  • A curved diagonal that wanders and turns the 7 into a 2 or a 9

Pull the diagonal in a single, quick, straight stroke.

  • A cross bar that is too high or too long

Cross at about the midline and keep the bar short, reaching just beyond each side of the diagonal.

  • Missing the top bar altogether

The bar is what makes it a 7. Without it the stroke looks like a slanted l or a 1.

Where you will write 7

The 7 is worth crossing on forms and in dates read by an international audience, for example when writing 17 or 27 on a passport form or a visa application. Cheques are one place where a crossed 7 helps, and many bank staff expect it from writers who learned handwriting abroad. For tattoos, a crossed 7 gives a distinctive European-style date, and a plain script 7 is often chosen for lucky-number designs.

Copy-paste styles for 7

Unicode has script letters but no script digits, so no copyable 7 is truly cursive. The styled versions you can paste are bold 𝟕, double-struck 𝟟, monospace 𝟽, circled ⑦, negative circled ❼, superscript ⁷ and subscript ₇. Lucky-seven designs often use circled ⑦ or negative circled ❼, but those are symbols and will not scale with text like normal digits. To try a 7 inside a date or a lucky-number design, open the number font generator; a crossed handwritten 7 needs a font image.

Cursive 7: questions

Why do people cross their 7?
A short bar through the stem separates a 7 from a 1, especially in countries where the 1 is written with a long upward flag. It is standard in much of continental Europe and Latin America. You can cross your 7 anywhere to improve clarity, and it is not considered an error.
How do you write a 7 in cursive?
Draw a horizontal bar at the top line, then a diagonal stroke from the right end down and to the left to the baseline. That is a plain 7. For a crossed 7, add a short horizontal bar through the middle of the diagonal as a separate stroke.
Should I cross my 7 on a cheque?
It helps. A crossed 7 cannot be mistaken for a 1, and it is a common form in many countries. Cheque staff expect clear, separate digits, so write the 7 firmly. Whether crossed or not, keep the top bar level and the diagonal straight.
Can I copy a cursive 7?
Unicode has no script digits and no crossed 7 in a script style. Copy-paste options are bold 𝟕, double-struck 𝟟, circled ⑦ or negative circled ❼. A crossed or script 7, the version with a short bar through the stem, needs a font and an image. Keep the plain digit as text as well if the 7 carries information.
