How to Write 9 in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
A cursive 9 is a small closed bowl at the top with a tail that drops to the baseline, or below it in some models. The tail can be straight or curved, and the choice changes the look: straight is more like print, curved is more like a g. The top bowl must be fully closed, or the digit can be altered into a 4 or a 7.
How to write 9
Start: Just right of the top centre where the bowl begins, moving left and down around the small oval.
- 1Start just right of the top centre and curve counterclockwise, down the left side of a small oval in the top half of the digit.
- 2Come around the bottom of the oval and up the right side, closing the bowl where you began.
- 3Without lifting, continue down from the right side of the bowl in a tail that goes to the baseline.
- 4For a curved tail, finish with a gentle hook to the left at the bottom; for a straight tail, keep the line straight on your slant.
- 5Lift the pen after the tail and leave a gap before the next digit.
Variations between schools and countries
Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian teach a closed oval with a straight tail that stops at the baseline. Some models let the tail descend below the baseline, giving the 9 a g-like look, and old-style numerals in some fonts do the same. In several European hands the tail curves to the left, like a hook. A few writers leave the bowl open at the top and draw the 9 in a diagonal stroke, which is quick but can be read as a 4. Whatever the tail, the bowl should be closed and clear.
Common mistakes with 9
An open bowl that makes the 9 look like a 4 or a 7
Close the oval completely, overlapping slightly at the starting point.
A bowl so large that the 9 resembles a lowercase g
Keep the bowl in the upper half and a straight tail below it.
A tail that curves the wrong way and looks like a 4
Curve the tail to the left only if your model does, and keep it short.
A crooked tail not on the slant of your letters
Pull the tail down on the same angle as your other digits.
Where you will write 9
The 9 is the final digit in single-digit counting and shows up in 2019, 2029 and dates such as the 9th. On cheques, the bowl must be closed, because an open 9 can be turned into a 4 or a 7. In phone numbers, the 9 and 4 are mixed up most when the bowls are loose. In tattoos, a 9 with a curved tail is often chosen for its flowing shape, especially in a script font.

Copy-paste styles for 9
