How to Write Dream in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Dream" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Dream moves from a tall d to a pointed r, a round e and a, and finally a three-hump m. That is a nice range of shapes, and the word reads clearly if each part is kept a consistent height. It is a popular choice for nursery art, journals and tattoos, usually paired with big, believe or catcher.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Dream" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Dream

  • Dr: Capital D is a large looped stem and a bowl that does not join, so lift and start the r just right of the bowl's end. Keep the r small to let the capital lead.
  • re: The r ends with a pointed shoulder and a short undercurve that goes straight into the e's loop. Make the e slanted and narrow so it does not look like an o.
  • ea: The e exits at the baseline and goes into the a's oval, which begins at the top and closes on the right. Close the a at the baseline and keep the stem short.
  • am: The a's exit runs into the first hump of the m. Make the three humps equal in width and finish with an exit stroke at the baseline.

Tricky spots

  • d shape: Lowercase d is a counterclockwise oval followed by a tall stem retraced back down. If the oval does not close, the d looks like a cl. Close it at the top right before climbing.
  • Pointed r: The r in dream has a shoulder that peaks sharply. If it is rounded it looks like an n, and dream becomes dnean. Keep it small and steep.
  • m humps: The m must have three equal humps. Count them aloud as you write them, and keep the same slant on all three.

Capitals

Dream is capitalised in titles and at the start of a line, and lowercase in phrases like dream big or sweet dreams. The capital D is a stem and bowl in two strokes and does not join, so leave a gap. Lowercase dream starts with the d oval and flows straight into the r, which is a smoother line.

Variations and styles

Dream looks good with a crescent moon or star replacing a dot, or with a swash from the m that sweeps under the word. For nursery prints, use a brush pen and keep letters round. A common layout is dream big, with big smaller and tucked under the m. Thicken the d stem and m downstrokes for a calligraphy look.

As a tattoo

Dream is often tattooed on a wrist or collarbone, sometimes with a small moon or feather. The m can fill in if humps are close together, so give each at least 2 mm of space and keep the letters about 8 mm tall. Lowercase flowing script usually looks best, and a capital D works too if you leave a small gap before the r.

Copy-paste versions of Dream

Script dream borrows one Letterlike letter, ℯ (U+212F) for e, and the capital D is regular math script when you write it large. That gives 𝒟𝓇ℯ𝒶𝓂, and the ℯ can look slightly lighter next to 𝒹, 𝓇, 𝒶 and 𝓂. Bold script 𝓓𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓶 comes from one block and matches in weight and slant.

Dream in cursive: questions

How do I write a cursive d in dream?
Make an a-shaped oval counterclockwise, close it at the top right, then go straight up to the full height of the stem and retrace down to the baseline. Exit with a short undercurve into the r. The stem should rise well above the oval, or the d will read as an a.
Why does my r look like an n in dream?
The r should have a sharp peak and a short exit, not a round hump. Keep it about half as wide as the n and make the stroke steeper. The next letter, e, then takes over the line. Practise dr and re as pairs so the pointed shoulder becomes automatic.
Is the e connected to the a in dream?
Yes. The e's exit runs along the baseline into the a's oval. If the a starts from a separate stroke, the word looks broken in the middle, so write them together. Keep the e open at the top, close the a on the right, and the m follows with the same rhythm.
What size should a dream tattoo be?
At least 8 mm letter height, with 2 mm between the m humps. Anything smaller risks the d oval and the e loop filling in over the years, as ink spreads slightly under skin. Ask for a stencil at full size and check the three humps of the m before the artist starts.
