How to Write Forever in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Forever" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Forever is seven letters and a favourite for rings, wedding signs and tattoos. It alternates between low letters and tall ones, and it hides a famously fiddly join (or) and a bridge letter (v) in the middle. The two e's and the two r's give it a rhythmic echo that looks lovely when done evenly.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Forever" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Forever

  • fo: The f closes its lower loop at the baseline, then the stroke climbs to the midline for the o's oval. Keep the o small and closed so it sits neatly beside the tall f, and finish with a short bridge.
  • or: From the o's bridge, push the stroke up slightly to make the r's peak, then the shoulder and the drop. A flat bridge loses the peak, and the pair looks like ov, which is easy to confuse at a glance.
  • re: After the r drops, its undercurve exit loops into the e. Keep the e below the r's shoulder so the r remains the taller letter, and make the loop round enough that it does not collapse.
  • ev: The e exits on the baseline and rises into the v's first point. Make the v's two points sharp at the midline and the bottom turn pointed, so it does not look like a u in the middle of the word.
  • ve: The v finishes with a checkstroke and a bridge at the midline, so the next e starts high. Dip the bridge a little before the e loop, or the e shrinks and looks like an i.

Tricky spots

  • The or join: This is one of the hardest joins in cursive, and forever has it right at the start. Practise o to r alone on a line: rise from the bridge, form a sharp peak, then drop. Do ten before attempting the whole word.
  • Lower loop of f: Forever begins with an f that has both loops. Close the lower loop on the right at the baseline and keep it slim, so the o that follows does not crowd it.
  • v bridge between e's: The v exits high and sits between two e's, so the e after it starts at the midline instead of the baseline. Keep both e loops the same size so the middle of the word looks balanced.

Capitals

Forever is typically written with a capital F on a title or a wedding sign and lowercase in a phrase like love you forever. The capital F is a wavy cap with a separate stem and crossbar, and it does not join, so leave a small gap before the o. Lowercase forever flows more smoothly in one stroke from the f to the final r.

Variations and styles

For a wedding sign or ring engraving, write forever with a long final r swash that trails away. A signature-style version can join the f's lower loop with a wide sweep. Brush calligraphers thicken the downstrokes of f, r and v and keep the bridge strokes hairline. Forever pairs naturally with names or dates on invitations and keepsakes.

As a tattoo

Forever is a popular tattoo on a wrist, finger or ribs, often as a single flowing line. Because it is seven letters, small sizes can crowd the e's and the v. Aim for at least 8 to 10 mm x-height, keep gaps between the loops consistent, and ask the artist to avoid thinning the joins between o and r.

Copy-paste versions of Forever

Copy-paste forever in script contains borrowed Letterlike letters: the script e is ℯ (U+212F) and the o is ℴ (U+2134), so lowercase script forever mixes blocks and may render unevenly in some fonts. Bold script 𝓯𝓸𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 is built from a single range and is the more reliable copy-paste version.

Forever in cursive: questions

Why is the or in forever so hard to write?
Because o ends with a bridge at the midline, so the r has to start from the middle of the line and still make a peak. If you run the bridge flat into the downstroke, the peak vanishes. Rise slightly first, then make the shoulder and drop.
How do I write the v in forever?
The v is a bridge letter: two sharp points at the midline with a pointed turn at the baseline, then a small checkstroke and a level bridge. The bridge flows into the next e, which starts high, so dip it gently and loop.
Does forever work in lowercase for a tattoo?
Yes, and lowercase is the most common choice. Lowercase forever is a single connected line, which looks smooth on skin. Check the f lower loop, the v and the two r letters at actual size so none of the shapes close up.
Is forever a good word for wedding signs?
Yes. It is short enough to write large and has good tall letters at the start and an elegant final r. Write it in cursive on a sign or wedding card with a name or a date beneath, and keep the loops generous.
