How to Write Happy Birthday in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator Β· Checked by Jordan Hale Β· Β· How we review content
Thirteen letters and two capitals make Happy Birthday a long line, so planning matters before the first stroke. Happy is carried by the double p and a final y that drops below the line; Birthday is carried by the capital B and the t and h that share a tall stem and loop. Write it in one pass and add every cross and dot last.

The joins in Happy Birthday
- pp: The first p ends with a bowl and its exit rises into the second p upstroke. Keep both descenders parallel and the same length, like two posts, or the pair looks like a wide w.
- py: The bowl of the second p exits on the baseline into the overcurve of the y. Make sure the p bowl is fully closed so the join is not read as pg.
- th: The t rises to a peak and retraces down; the exit climbs all the way to the top line for the h loop. Make the h loop taller than the t spike and cross the t after you finish the word.
- ay: At the end of Birthday the a closes and its exit arches over into the y hump. Keep the oval of the a shut or the ending reads as ciy.
Tricky spots
- Double p: Two descenders side by side look crowded. Space them evenly and make the bowls identical in size.
- Two capitals: H joins the next letter through its crossbar loop, but B does not, so lift after B and start the i close to its lower bump. Keep both capitals the same height.
- Crossing and dotting: The word has a t to cross and an i to dot. Add them after both words are finished so the pen never stops mid-word, and cross the t with a single flick that reaches the h loop.
Capitals
Capitalise both words for a greeting or a card front: Happy Birthday. Capital H is two stems linked by a looped crossbar that carries into the a in Zaner-Bloser cursive. Capital B ends on its lower bump and does not connect, so lift after it. In a sentence such as a message inside a card, only the first word takes a capital and birthday stays lowercase.
Variations and styles
On a card, make the capital H and B larger than the rest and let the y tail of Happy sweep under the first word as a flourish. In a signature style, the loop of the B can open outward. Cake toppers and banners use a thick pen or marker, so keep the tall t and h loops clear of each other. Chalkboard and brush versions benefit from extra space between the two words so the descender of y has room.

Copy-paste versions of Happy Birthday
The script version, βπΆπ π π β¬πΎπππ½πΉπΆπ, swaps in two Letterlike capitals: β (U+210B) opens Happy and β¬ (U+212C) opens Birthday, and either can sit a touch heavier than the lowercase beside it. Every lowercase letter in the phrase has a normal math script form, because there is no e, g or o to substitute. Bold script ππͺπΉπΉπ ππ²π»π½π±ππͺπ draws all thirteen letters from a single block, so it is the even choice for a caption.
