How to Write Happy Halloween in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator ยท Checked by Jordan Hale ยท ยท How we review content
Happy Halloween has fourteen letters, two capital H's and a lot of doubles: pp, ll and ee. That repetition is both the charm and the hazard of the phrase, because each double needs to match exactly. It is a popular choice for party invitations, treat bags and window art, and the y and w give it a playful rhythm.

The joins in Happy Halloween
- Ha: Each capital H is two stems and a looped crossbar, and it connects: after the crossbar the stroke carries on into the a. Keep the a small compared with the H, and make both capital H's the same size.
- pp: The first p's bowl exits at the baseline into the second p's stem. Both stems drop straight below the line, so keep them parallel and the same depth.
- py: The second p's bowl exits into the y's first undercurve. Make the y with a clean descender loop, and keep it narrow to avoid hitting the line below.
- ll: The two l loops in Halloween need to be tall and the same width. The first l exits at the baseline into the second, and the second exits into the o.
- ow: The o's bridge runs level to the top of the w. The w has three narrow undercurves and ends with a small check that rises to the e.
- ee: The e exits at the baseline and goes straight into the next e's loop. Keep both small and slanted, with open loops.
Tricky spots
- Matching pairs: Happy Halloween has pp, ll and ee, and each pair needs to match in height and slant. Write the second of each pair at the same speed as the first, and check against the guide lines.
- Two capital H's: The H in Happy and the H in Halloween must be the same size. Practise the pair side by side before writing the phrase.
- Space between words: Leave a gap of about one H width between Happy and Halloween. The y's descender can look like it belongs to the next word if the gap is tight.
Capitals
Both words are capitalised, since it is a holiday greeting, so there are two H's. In school cursive each H runs into the next letter: the crossbar loop sweeps right and becomes the entry to the a. In a very casual note, you might write lowercase happy halloween, which flows more smoothly through the y and the w.
Variations and styles
Happy Halloween is a good match for spooky lettering with a bat, a pumpkin or a ghost in place of the o. A card might stack Happy above Halloween. Add a long swash from the final n. In calligraphy, thicken the H stems, the l loops and the p descenders. The playful w also takes a small flourish.

Copy-paste versions of Happy Halloween
Script โ๐ถ๐ ๐ ๐ โ๐ถ๐๐โด๐โฏโฏ๐ uses โ (U+210B) once per word, and Halloween adds โด (U+2134) once and โฏ (U+212F) twice, so four of its nine letters are substitutes. Those are the glyphs most likely to look lighter or tilt differently in some fonts. Bold script ๐๐ช๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ช๐ต๐ต๐ธ๐๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ท has no substitutes at all, so choose it for a party invitation caption.
