B in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
B is two bowls stacked on a vertical spine, which makes it one of the most solid letters in a throw-up and one of the easiest to overload in a piece. Because the bowls are rounded, B takes bubble treatment well. What takes practice is the waist, the spot where the two bowls meet and where counters tend to merge, and keeping the bottom bowl a touch wider than the top so the letter stands firmly.

How to draw a graffiti capital B
- 1Draw the spine as a slightly leaning vertical line, then add two bowls to the right, the lower one a little larger than the upper one.
- 2Mark the waist where the bowls meet and let both bowls touch the spine so no gap is left in the letter's edge.
- 3Thicken the spine first, then the bowls, keeping the top and bottom horizontals as thick as the vertical.
- 4Outline the shape in one pass and draw two oval counters, the upper one slightly smaller, leaving a finger-width of body around each.
- 5Add a small notch at the waist as a sharp inner corner, then fill, highlight the top of the upper bowl and cast a block behind the spine.
Tip: Draw the two counters as ovals first and build the bowls around them. Equal rings of body around each hole keep the B from turning lumpy.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase b
- 1Draw a tall spine that rises above the x-height, with the bowl attached at the lower right as a single round form.
- 2Keep the bowl's top edge flush with the x-height line so it sits at the same level as the other small letters.
- 3Thicken the spine slightly more than the bowl, then outline both as one shape with a tidy join at the baseline.
- 4Let the bottom of the spine kick out left or right for a tag-style tail, or finish it square for a block style.
- 5Fill the bowl last and leave a thin highlight on the upper curve of the bowl.
Tip: A lowercase b has an ascender that can be used as a flagpole. Pointing it into a tall arrow gives an easy rhythm without ruining readability.
What makes B awkward or easy
Two counters and one waist make B crowded. Add an outline to each edge and the holes shrink, then the waist swallows itself. The best fixes are to enlarge the lower bowl, shorten the upper one and let the waist be a sharp notch rather than a deep indent. In a word, B is sturdy enough to carry arrows on its top and bottom bars without losing its shape.
Variations
A tag B is a vertical stroke with one quick looping curve. A throw-up B is two fat bubbles on a thick spine, one outline and one fill. A piece B may hold highlights in each bowl, a 3D block under the spine and arrows pushing out of the bars. Wildstyle B often splits the bowls apart and connects them with swirling extensions.
Common mistakes with graffiti B
The two bowls are the same size and the letter looks like an 8.
Make the lower bowl wider than the upper one and keep the waist notch on the right side only.
The counters fill in once the outline is added.
Draw them first at full size and keep the body around each one the same width.
The spine and bowls have different weights and the join looks broken.
Thicken the spine and the bowls to a matching width before outlining the shape.
The B leans forward but the bowls stay upright.
Slant the whole letter, bowls and counters included, so the lean reads as a single motion.
Ideas for graffiti B
B suits names like Bella, Ben or Bex, and its two bowls give you a ready place for highlights and small characters or stars. A good practice drill is to draw a row of B shapes where each bowl pair has a different size ratio, and see which one still reads clearly when outlined and filled.
