R in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
R is a P with a leg, and the leg is where the energy goes. It kicks out from the bowl and across the baseline, often under the next letter, which makes R one of the best letters for connecting a word. The letter has to carry three things at once: a spine, a closed bowl and a diagonal. Keeping each one clear while the leg flies is the craft.
Outline version to colour or trace
How to draw a graffiti capital R
- 1Draw a leaning spine and a bowl on its upper half, as you would for a P.
- 2Add a leg that leaves the bowl where it meets the spine and swings down to the lower right, longer than the bowl is wide.
- 3Thicken the spine first, then the bowl, then the leg, keeping the leg the same width as the bowl wall.
- 4Outline the shape, keeping the bowl's counter open and a clear gap between the leg and the spine.
- 5Flick the leg into an arrow or a swoosh, then fill, highlight the bowl and add a block along the stem.
Tip: Start the leg from the bottom of the bowl, not from the spine. A leg that grows from the bowl looks relaxed, while one that starts at the spine looks like a second stem.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase r
- 1Draw a short stem at x-height and a small arch springing from its upper part, leaning forward.
- 2Thicken the stem and arch, and end the arch in a blob, a flick or a small arrow.
- 3Keep the stem plain or give it a small foot at the baseline.
- 4Outline and keep the space under the arch open.
- 5Fill, highlight the top of the arch and link the foot to the next letter.
Tip: A lowercase r is a small letter with a lot of reach, so its arch can pull the next letter into place if you angle it toward the neighbour.
What makes R awkward or easy
R packs a bowl and a diagonal against one spine, and the point where the bowl, spine and leg meet turns into a dark knot. The leg needs enough length to be seen, and the gap between leg and spine needs enough space to stay open. R is also the letter most likely to be confused with P or B, so the leg needs to be unmistakable.
Variations
A tag R is a loop and a long flick in one gesture. A throw-up R is a fat bowl with a short, chunky leg. A piece R might have a leg that reaches under the next two letters, an arrow at the foot and a deep block. Wildstyle R lets the leg curl back up and around, forming a loop that frames the word.
Common mistakes with graffiti R
The leg starts at the spine and the R looks like a P with a stick.
Begin the leg at the bottom of the bowl so it flows out of it.
The leg is short and stubby.
Extend it until it reaches beyond the bowl's width and end it with a clear flick.
The junction of bowl, spine and leg is a blob.
Cut a small notch at the junction and slim the strokes there.
The counter in the bowl closes up.
Draw the counter before outlining and keep a finger-width of paper inside it.
Ideas for graffiti R
R opens names like Ray, Rosa and Remy, and words such as Rebel and Rhyme. Practise a row of R legs: straight, curled, split, arrowed and doubled. The kick is often a writer's most recognisable signature, so spend time on it.

Graffiti R you can copy and paste
Unicode contains no graffiti alphabet. For close copy-paste styles use bold gothic 𝕽 𝖗, black squares 🆁 or bubble letters Ⓡ ⓡ. They are single glyphs, so the leg will not kick out or connect to the next letter.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
