W in Graffiti Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital W
Lowercase w

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

W is a double V, which makes it the widest letter in the alphabet and the one most likely to take over a word. It has four diagonals, three peaks and two points, and in graffiti the trick is to treat it as a rhythm instead of a drawing of four lines. Done well, W gives a word a jagged beat. Done badly, it looks like a fence that fell over.

How to draw a graffiti capital W

  1. 1Draw four diagonals as a zigzag, with the middle peak lower than the two outside peaks so the letter has a clear shape.
  2. 2Lean the whole zigzag forward and make the right half slightly narrower than the left, so the W seems to move.
  3. 3Thicken all four strokes to the same weight, with the middle two slightly thinner to avoid clogging.
  4. 4Outline the body and keep the two inner triangles open and equal in size.
  5. 5Tip the outer peaks with arrows, fill, highlight the left edges and add a block under the two points.

Tip: Draw the two triangles inside the W first, as plain open shapes, and build the strokes around them. If those triangles stay clean, the W survives any decoration.

How to draw a graffiti lowercase w

  1. 1Draw a small zigzag at x-height, narrower than the capital, with the middle peak the same height as the sides.
  2. 2Round the two bottom points slightly so they do not dip below the baseline.
  3. 3Thicken the strokes evenly and keep the inner triangles open.
  4. 4Flick the right end into a tail that links to the next letter.
  5. 5Outline, fill and highlight the left strokes.

Tip: A lowercase w is easiest when you treat it as two small Vs sharing a stroke, which keeps the rhythm even.

What makes W awkward or easy

W has four strokes and two sharp inner triangles, which clog first. Its width pushes neighbouring letters away, so a word with a W often has a hole next to it. The middle peak decides whether the letter reads as W or as two V letters. Keeping it lower than the outer peaks also helps the letter fit into a tighter space.

Variations

A tag W is a fast double check mark. A throw-up W is a pair of fat Vs sharing a middle stroke. A piece W may have arrows on the peaks, a split-colour middle and a block under the points. Wildstyle W turns the zigzag into a ribbon that wraps around the neighbours, so the word looks like one continuous line.

Common mistakes with graffiti W

  • The W is much wider than the rest of the word.

Condense it by bringing the strokes closer, and move the neighbouring letters in.

  • The middle peak reaches the top and the W looks like two Vs.

Drop the middle peak below the outer ones so the letter has a clear single shape.

  • The inner triangles close under the outline.

Draw them first at full size and build the strokes around them.

  • The points dip far below the baseline.

Round them and keep them on the baseline so the word keeps a steady footing.

Ideas for graffiti W

W starts names like Will, Wren and Wes, and words like Wild, Wall and Writer. Try drawing a word with W in the middle and see how it changes the spacing. Compare a narrow W with a wide one in the same word.

Graffiti W you can copy and paste

Unicode has no graffiti alphabet. For close copy-paste forms use bold gothic 𝖂 𝖜, black squares 🆆 or bubble letters Ⓦ ⓦ. They are fixed glyphs, so the zigzag cannot be condensed or leaned.

Graffiti W: questions

How do you draw a graffiti letter W?
Draw a zigzag of four diagonals with the middle peak lower than the outer ones, leaning forward. Thicken evenly, outline and keep the two inner triangles open. Add arrows to the outer peaks, fill the body, highlight the left edges and add a block under the points.
How do I stop a W from being too wide?
Bring the strokes closer together, lower the middle peak and lean the letter forward. You can also thin the middle strokes. Check the word as a whole, because a slightly wide W looks natural, while a very wide one leaves holes beside it.
How is a lowercase w drawn in graffiti?
Draw a small zigzag at x-height, round the bottom points and keep the inner triangles open. Thicken evenly, flick the right end toward the next letter and highlight the left strokes. Treat it as two small Vs sharing a stroke.
Why does my W look like two Vs?
The middle peak probably reaches the top line. Lower it so the centre is clearly smaller than the outer peaks, and let the two middle strokes join into a single point. That gives you one letter instead of a pair.
