Key facts
- Greek capitals run from U+0391 (alpha) to U+03A9 (omega) and lowercase from U+03B1 to U+03C9, in the Greek and Coptic block U+0370 to U+03FF.
- U+03A2 is unassigned, so capital sigma (U+03A3) follows capital rho (U+03A1) with a gap, and final sigma is its own code point, U+03C2.
- The micro sign µ (U+00B5) and Greek mu μ (U+03BC) are different characters, and the ohm sign Ω (U+2126) is not Greek capital omega (U+03A9).
- Fourteen Greek capitals look like a Latin or Cyrillic letter, so mixed-alphabet text can fail searches and spoof names.
- Mathematical alphanumeric Greek letters start at U+1D6A8; they are for formulas, not ordinary Greek text.
Greek alphabet Unicode: code points and names
The table shows each letter’s code point, its HTML entity and its LaTeX command. Capital letters run from U+0391 to U+03A9 and lowercase from U+03B1 to U+03C9; the same offset applies to both. In Unicode names, lambda is spelled LAMDA (“GREEK CAPITAL LETTER LAMDA”), which follows the Greek spelling λάμδα. Everywhere else, including this site, the usual English spelling is lambda.
The variant forms have their own code points and entities:
| Character | Code point | Unicode name | Entities |
|---|---|---|---|
| ς | U+03C2 | GREEK SMALL LETTER FINAL SIGMA | ς ς |
| ϑ | U+03D1 | GREEK THETA SYMBOL | ϑ ϑ |
| ϕ | U+03D5 | GREEK PHI SYMBOL | ϕ ϕ |
| ϖ | U+03D6 | GREEK PI SYMBOL | ϖ ϖ |
| ϵ | U+03F5 | GREEK LUNATE EPSILON SYMBOL | ϵ ϵ |
| ϰ | U+03F0 | GREEK KAPPA SYMBOL | ϰ ϰ |
| ϱ | U+03F1 | GREEK RHO SYMBOL | ϱ ϱ |
All named entities above were checked against the HTML Standard’s entity list (the HTML5 table in Python’s html.entities). For plain letters the entity is the English name, for example Α and α. Note that ε is the ordinary ε (U+03B5) and ϵ the lunate form. In HTML5, Ω also exists and resolves to Greek capital omega (U+03A9), not the ohm sign.
How do I use Greek characters in code?
| Context | Alpha (U+03B1) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HTML named entity | α |
Case matters: Α is the capital |
| HTML numeric | α or α |
Decimal or hexadecimal |
| CSS content | content: "\03B1"; |
Backslash and hex digits |
| JavaScript | "α" or String.fromCodePoint(0x3B1) |
\u{...} for code points above U+FFFF |
| Python 3 | "α" or chr(0x3B1) |
ord("α") returns 945 |
| Excel | =UNICHAR(945) |
Decimal code point |
| LaTeX (math mode) | \alpha |
Needs $...$ |
For text in a LaTeX document outside math mode, the textgreek package provides commands like \textalpha; upright (non-italic) Greek in math needs a package such as upgreek. We list these by name only; check the package manual for options.
What should I know about LaTeX Greek letters?
The short version is below; the full command table, upright and bold Greek and text-mode commands are on LaTeX Greek letters.
- No command for omicron. Type a plain
o. Capital letters that look like Latin letters have no command either (see the table’s last column). - Variants.
\varepsilon(ε),\vartheta(ϑ),\varpi(ϖ),\varrho(ϱ),\varsigma(ς) and\varphi(φ) give the variant shapes. HTML names run the other way:ϕandϵare ϕ (U+03D5) and ϵ (U+03F5).\varkappaneeds the amssymb package. - The epsilon trap. In standard LaTeX math,
\epsilondraws the lunate ϵ and\varepsilonthe curly ε, which is the opposite of what the Unicode code points would suggest. Look at the output. - Bold Greek.
\boldsymbol(amsmath) or\bm(bm package) makes bold Greek;\mathbfleaves lowercase Greek letters unchanged.
Which characters look like Greek letters?
Which symbols have a Greek twin?
| Looks like | Is | Code point | The real Greek letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| µ | MICRO SIGN | U+00B5 | μ GREEK SMALL LETTER MU, U+03BC |
| Ω | OHM SIGN | U+2126 | Ω GREEK CAPITAL LETTER OMEGA, U+03A9 |
| ∆ | INCREMENT | U+2206 | Δ GREEK CAPITAL LETTER DELTA, U+0394 |
| ∑ | N-ARY SUMMATION | U+2211 | Σ GREEK CAPITAL LETTER SIGMA, U+03A3 |
| ∏ | N-ARY PRODUCT | U+220F | Π GREEK CAPITAL LETTER PI, U+03A0 |
| A | LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A | U+0041 | Α GREEK CAPITAL LETTER ALPHA, U+0391 (and Cyrillic А U+0410) |
| B | LATIN CAPITAL LETTER B | U+0042 | Β GREEK CAPITAL LETTER BETA, U+0392 (and Cyrillic В U+0412) |
The first five are symbols that have a Greek twin. Use the letters for text and the symbols only when the symbol itself is the meaning, as in a formula.
Which Greek capitals are homoglyphs?
The last two rows of the table show homoglyphs, characters from different alphabets with the same shape. Fourteen Greek capitals have a Latin or Cyrillic twin (Α Β Ε Ζ Η Ι Κ Μ Ν Ο Ρ Τ Υ Χ). Mixing alphabets inside a word is a known technique for spoofing names, which is why some systems restrict or flag mixed-script usernames.
What are the mathematical alphanumeric Greek letters?
The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (starting at U+1D400) contains Greek sets for formulas. Bold capital alpha is U+1D6A8 (𝚨), and the bold small alpha 𝛂 is U+1D6C2. The italic set starts at U+1D6E2 (capital) and U+1D6FC (small), the bold italic set at U+1D71C and U+1D736, and sans-serif bold at U+1D756 and U+1D770. They also include nabla (𝛁, U+1D6C1) and partial differential (𝛛, U+1D6DB) forms. They are meant for maths typesetting, not for writing Greek text, and they take two code units in UTF-16. The unstyle text tool can turn many styled letters back to plain ones.
Which symbols borrow Greek shapes?
Most of the lookalike pairs above live among the maths and science symbols. The operators ∑ ∏ ∆ and the signs for ohm, micro and angstrom, together with copy buttons, are on math symbols and science symbols. Five letters have their own page with every form, code and lookalike: sigma, delta, pi, omega and mu. The numeral signs stigma, koppa and sampi and the keraia marks are on Greek numerals.

- Greek AlphabetThe Greek alphabet has 24 letters, from alpha to omega, each with an uppercase and a lowercase form. Tap any letter to copy it, check its name, sound and numeric value in the table, or print a clean one-page chart. This page treats the letters as characters and symbols, not as a language course.
- How to Type Greek LettersHow to type Greek letters on any device: add a Greek keyboard on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android, or use Alt+X in Word and UNICHAR in Excel for a single character. Copying from the alphabet page works everywhere. Each method notes what we verified and which traps to avoid.
- Greek Letters in Math and ScienceGreek letters in math and science are conventional symbols: π is the circle constant, Δ a change, σ a standard deviation, λ a wavelength and Ω the SI ohm. Only a few meanings are fixed by standards, so they vary by field and author. Look up a letter below; each one lists its meanings grouped by field.
- Convert Fancy Text Back to Plain TextConvert fancy text to normal here: paste bold, cursive, gothic, bubble or small caps text and the plain letters appear instantly, ready to edit, search for or read aloud.
- Text Symbols to Copy and PasteText symbols are Unicode characters, such as hearts, stars, arrows, check marks and brackets, that you copy and paste into bios, names, messages and documents. Each one shows its Unicode name and code point, so you know exactly what you are pasting and can tell it apart from an emoji.
