D in Different Fonts

Copy D in every Unicode style. D is one of the tidier letters: no borrowed symbols in any math alphabet, but plenty of mirror twins and one Roman numeral that looks identical.

Style a whole word in the lettering generator โ†’

From a door to a D

The Phoenician letter daleth meant โ€œdoorโ€, and it was drawn as a triangle or a door-like flap. The Greeks kept the triangle as delta (ฮ”), which is why โ€œdeltaโ€ still means a triangular river mouth. The Romans rounded one side and produced the D we use: a straight stem with a single bowl.

Lowercase d grew out of Roman cursive writing, where the bowl shrank and the stem extended above it. Uncial manuscripts often curved that stem back to the left, a shape you can still see in some decorative fonts and in the bold gothic ๐–‰.

A rare letter with no Unicode gaps

Many letters have at least one styled form that Unicode borrowed from the older Letterlike Symbols block. D isnโ€™t one of them. Every mathematical alphabet has its own native D:

Style Capital Lowercase
Bold cursive ๐““ ๐“ญ
Cursive script ๐’Ÿ ๐’น
Bold gothic ๐•ฏ ๐–‰
Gothic Fraktur ๐”‡ ๐”ก
Double-struck ๐”ป ๐••
Monospace ๐™ณ ๐š

So a styled D will match the letters around it in any font that supports the block. The bold text generator shows the serif ๐ƒ and sans ๐—— versions in full words. The double-struck lowercase ๐•• is sometimes used in maths for the differential d, a niche use that doesnโ€™t affect how it pastes.

For writing D by hand, including the looped cursive capital that often confuses learners, see the cursive D page.

D and its three twins

D is part of a family of letters that are rotations and reflections of each other: b, d, p, q. This is why flip styles are so easy to build for D and why theyโ€™re easy to misread:

  • Upside down: d becomes p, and capital D becomes แ—ก (a Canadian Syllabics character), since thereโ€™s no turned capital D in common fonts.
  • Mirror: d becomes b, and capital D again uses แ—ก.

This symmetry also matters for accessibility: people with dyslexia commonly report confusing b and d, and styles that change the shape further can make that worse. The fancy text accessibility guide has more on choosing readable styles.

D in the symbol styles

The look-alike alphabets pull D-shaped characters from all over Unicode, and a few of them are real letters with their own sounds:

  • ฤ (currency style) is the Latin D with stroke used in Vietnamese and Croatian. The Vietnamese currency sign is actually โ‚ซ, so this isnโ€™t a currency symbol at all.
  • แ—ช (Asian and Tribal styles) is from Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics.
  • แŽ  (Cherokee style) is the Cherokee syllable โ€œaโ€, not a d.
  • โ† in faux Cyrillic is an archaic Roman numeral form for 5,000.
  • แ›ž (runic) is the Elder Futhark rune dagaz, which stood for /d/, so the runic choice is a historical match.

None of these normalize back to a plain D, unlike the bold or script versions, so a search box or username filter may not read them as D.

Small and tiny D

  • Small caps: แด… (U+1D05), from the Phonetic Extensions block.
  • Superscript: แดฐ and แตˆ, both available.
  • Subscript: none. A styled subscript word with a d in it will show one full-size letter.

Frequency

D is about 4.3% of letters in English text, mostly thanks to โ€œandโ€ and past-tense endings like -ed. Because so many words end in d, itโ€™s a letter where a mismatched style shows at the end of a word rather than the start.

D in different fonts: questions

Which fancy D looks best as an initial?
Bold cursive ๐““ gives D a big looped stem and matches the rest of the bold script alphabet perfectly. For a heraldic look use bold gothic ๐•ฏ, whose capital is one of the most decorative in the Fraktur set. Double-struck ๐”ป suits a clean, technical logo-style initial.
Why does upside-down text turn d into p?
Rotating a lowercase d by 180 degrees really does produce a p: the bowl moves to the other side and the ascender becomes a descender. Upside-down generators therefore use a plain p for d, and q for b. Mirror text instead swaps d for b, because a horizontal flip keeps the stem pointing up.
Is there a subscript d?
No. Unicode's subscript letters cover only a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x, so subscript generators leave d unchanged. A superscript d does exist in both cases: แดฐ (U+1D30) and แตˆ (U+1D48).
Is the Roman numeral D the same character as the letter D?
Usually yes: people write 500 as a plain letter D. Unicode also has a separate ROMAN NUMERAL FIVE HUNDRED, โ…ฎ (U+216E), kept for compatibility with older East Asian character sets. It looks the same but is a different code point, and Unicode normalization folds it back to a plain D.
