G in Different Fonts

Copy a styled G. G is a Roman invention, a C with an extra stroke, and its lowercase comes in two shapes that Unicode treats very differently. The script g is borrowed from an older block.

A made-up letter

Most Latin letters arrived ready-made from Greek via the Etruscans. G didnโ€™t. Early Latin used C for both the /k/ and /g/ sounds, inherited from the Etruscans who had no /g/ at all. Around the 3rd century BC the Romans added a short stroke to C to tell them apart, and the result was G. Ancient sources credit the change to Spurius Carvilius Ruga.

The new letter needed a place, and it took the seventh position, where Z had sat in the Greek order. Z was rarely needed in Latin and had been dropped; it was later brought back for Greek loanwords and put at the end. So the ancestor of G is really gimel (the Phoenician source of Greek gamma and Latin C), with a Roman modification.

Two lowercase gโ€™s

Lowercase g has two very different shapes, and the styled alphabets mix them:

Shape Description Styled examples
Double-storey (binocular) Small upper bowl joined to a closed lower loop ๐  ๐–Œ ๐•˜ (many fonts)
Single-storey (open-tail) Bowl with a hook tail ๐—€ ๐—ด ๐š ๐“ฐ ๐‘”

Which one you see depends partly on the font your device uses, so the same bold serif ๐  can look different on iPhone and Android. Handwriting nearly always uses the open-tail form, and the cursive g is the version with a looped descender; the cursive G page walks through both the capital and lowercase strokes.

The borrowed script g

The script lowercase g is โ„Š (U+210A), one of eleven letters the math script alphabet borrows from Letterlike Symbols. Like โ„ฏ and โ„ด, it can come out looking lighter or more upright than the rest of the word. The capital ๐’ข is native. That creates a quirk: in regular script, the capital G matches perfectly but the lowercase doesnโ€™t, the reverse of B, F or H.

If your name has a g in it, compare:

  • Script: ๐’ขโ„ฏโ„ด๐“‡โ„Š๐’พ๐’ถ (three borrowed letters: e, o and g)
  • Bold script: ๐“–๐“ฎ๐“ธ๐“ป๐“ฐ๐“ฒ๐“ช (no borrowed letters)

The cursive text generator shows both versions of any name you type.

Gothic G

Fraktur and bold Fraktur give G one of their most ornate capitals, ๐”Š and ๐•ฒ. At small sizes on a phone, ๐•ฒ can read as an S or a C to people unfamiliar with blackletter. If you use the Old English text generator for a name starting with G, preview it at the size your platform shows names.

Small G and missing G

  • Small caps ษข (U+0262) is from IPA Extensions and well supported.
  • Superscript แดณ (U+1D33) and แต (U+1D4D) both exist.
  • Subscript: none. G isnโ€™t among the 17 letters with a subscript form.

G in symbols and look-alikes

  • โ‚ฒ (currency style) is the Paraguayan guaranรญ sign (U+20B2).
  • โ… (upside-down capital) is TURNED SANS-SERIF CAPITAL G (U+2141), from Letterlike Symbols, and ฦƒ is used for the flipped lowercase.
  • แ€ (Cherokee style) is the Cherokee syllable โ€œnahโ€, which just happens to look like G.
  • แšท (runic) is gebo, the Elder Futhark rune for /g/, so that one matches.
  • ษ  (squiggle) is a G with hook, used in phonetics for an implosive sound.

Unlike A, C or E, capital G has no common identical twin in Cyrillic or Greek, so it is less often used for spoofing.

Frequency

G is about 2.0% of English letters, tied with Y. Itโ€™s most common at word ends in -ing, so styled verbs show off whichever lowercase g your style uses.

G in different fonts: questions

Why does the cursive script g not match the other letters?
The script small g is โ„Š (U+210A), from the Letterlike Symbols block, rather than the mathematical script alphabet. Unicode reused it to avoid encoding the same symbol twice. Fonts often draw โ„Š in a different weight or slant, so it can look out of place. Bold cursive ๐“ฐ is native to the math block and always matches.
What are the two kinds of lowercase g?
The double-storey g has a closed lower loop, like the one in most serif fonts (๐ ). The single-storey g has an open hook tail, like handwriting and many sans fonts (๐—€). Phonetic writing treats the open form as its own character, ษก (U+0261), for the hard g sound.
Is there a small caps G?
Yes: ษข (U+0262) from the IPA Extensions block, where it stands for the voiced uvular stop. It is widely supported, so small caps text with g displays reliably. G also has superscripts in both cases (แดณ and แต), but no subscript.
Who invented the letter G?
Roman tradition credits Spurius Carvilius Ruga, a teacher of the 3rd century BC, with adding a bar to C to make G, because C was doing double duty for /k/ and /g/. G took the seventh slot in the alphabet, where Z had been.
