V in Different Fonts

V is the Roman original that later gave up its vowel job to U. Its sharp point makes it one of the easiest letters to fake with characters from other scripts. Here is every real styled V.

The Roman letter for two sounds

V comes from the same root as U, W and Y: the Phoenician waw, Greek upsilon. The Romans wrote it as a sharp V and used it for both the vowel u and the consonant w sound, so VENI VIDI VICI was pronounced roughly “weni widi wiki.” The pointed form was easy to cut into stone.

Over the 1500s and 1600s, printers settled on the rounded U for the vowel and kept the pointed V for the consonant. By then the consonant sound itself had shifted from w to the v we use today. The full story of that split is on the U letter page.

The V you can copy

Script 𝒱 𝓋 lowercase can look like a small u with a loop
Bold script 𝓥 𝓿 clearer v at small sizes
Fraktur 𝔙 𝔳 the lowercase looks quite unlike a modern v

A Fraktur v that surprises people

Blackletter v is one of the hardest letters for modern readers. 𝔳 is built from a broken stroke with a curl at the top and often looks like a b or a small n with a tail. If you are styling a word with v in gothic letters, try it next to the others first. Our Old English text generator shows the whole alphabet at once.

Script v versus u

In many script fonts, 𝓋 and 𝓊 are close, because cursive v is traditionally written as a u-like curve with a small loop at the end. Bold script 𝓿 has more contrast and holds up better in a short bio.

Lookalikes and flips

V’s simple point makes it easy to imitate:

  • Λ Greek lambda, used for upside-down V
  • ʌ IPA turned v, used for upside-down lowercase
  • ν Greek nu, which looks like v
  • ѵ Cyrillic izhitsa, a historical letter that itself descends from Greek upsilon
  • √ the square-root sign, used by the katakana style
  • ᐯ Canadian Syllabics PE, used by the Asian and Tribal styles

None of these is a V, so they break search and can look like spoofing in usernames. Mirroring changes nothing, since V is symmetric.

How often V appears

V is uncommon in English, around 1.0% of letters, and almost never ends a native English word. Words like love, have and give add a silent e partly because of an old spelling habit of not ending words in v. In styled text, that means a v is usually followed by an e you are also styling.

V in names and monograms

A V points downward, so it is strong at the bottom of a stacked design or in the centre of a three-letter monogram. The bold gothic 𝖁 and bold script 𝓥 give it the most presence. The ✌ peace or victory hand is a popular companion, since many people read it as a V. For the handwritten shape and how it joins the next letter, see the cursive V lesson.

V in different fonts: questions

What is the upside-down V character?
Generators flip capital V into Λ (U+039B), the Greek capital lambda, and lowercase v into ʌ (U+028C, LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED V). The second is a real IPA symbol for the vowel in 'strut' and 'cup', so linguists use it every day. A screen reader will announce lambda and turned v, not V.
Is the Roman numeral five the same as the letter V?
Visually yes, but Unicode has a separate character, Ⅴ (U+2164, ROMAN NUMERAL FIVE), in the Number Forms block. It exists for compatibility with East Asian text, where Roman numerals are often treated as single symbols. In normal writing you should type the letter V; Ⅴ folds back to V under NFKC normalization.
Why does Greek text show a v where I expected an n?
The Greek lowercase nu, ν (U+03BD), looks like a Latin v but is the Greek n. So the Greek word for 'new', νέος, starts with what looks like a v. If you copy a Greek-style name into a username, a ν will be treated as Greek, not as v or n.
Is there a superscript capital V?
Yes, ⱽ (U+2C7D, MODIFIER LETTER CAPITAL V). Unlike the other superscript capitals, which sit in Phonetic Extensions, it lives in Latin Extended-C, so on some older fonts it may look slightly different from ᴬ or ᴮ. The lowercase superscript is ᵛ, and the subscript ᵥ is one of 17 subscript letters.
