"Ethan" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Ethan is built around the th pair in the middle. The t is a short stem that needs a crossbar, and it hands off straight into a tall h loop. The E at the front is friendly because it connects, and the end of the name is an easy a and n. The only real task is a clean t.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Ethan" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Ethan

  • Et: The E exit rises into the t, which goes up above the midline, drops straight down and exits along the baseline. Cross the t at the end of the name.
  • th: The t leaves at the baseline and climbs into the h as a tall upstroke. Loop at the top and come back down. Place the crossbar so it sits across the t and may touch the h loop.
  • ha: The h arch finishes at the baseline and rises into the a. Close the oval and retrace the right side.
  • an: The a exits into the n, a stem with one rounded arch. End with a short tail or a flourish.

Tricky spots

  • Crossing the t: Do not cross the t until the name is finished, so the flow is not broken. A short, level bar is enough.
  • The h loop: A loop that is too wide makes the h look like a b. Keep it narrow.
  • E loops: Keep the two loops of the E different in size, with the lower one larger.

The capital E

Capital E is two loops, a small one above a larger one, like a reversed 3. It connects, so the last stroke curls into the t without lifting. Keep both loops round and the exit short. Because the t is a short letter, a very big E leaves it looking small.

Ethan as a signature

The E and the th pair carry the name. The crossbar of the t can extend into the h and make a link between them. Keep the a closed, and finish with a rising tail on the n.

Short forms of Ethan

Ethan does not have a widely used short form, so most people write the full five letters.

As a tattoo

The t crossbar and the h loop are close together, so ask for them to be spaced to avoid merging. A slightly larger tattoo keeps the E loops open.

Script ℰ𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓃 and bold script 𝓔𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓷 are generated by code from the Unicode mathematical script blocks, so you can paste either one anywhere that accepts Unicode text. Only the opening ℰ (U+2130) is borrowed from the Letterlike Symbols block, so the E can look lighter or sit a little differently than the 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓃 that follows it. The other four letters are standard script. Bold script uses one range, so the five characters match whatever device shows them.

Ethan in cursive: questions

How do you write Ethan in cursive?
Write a capital E with two loops, run into a t, cross it later, go up into a looped h, then an a and an n. Every letter connects, so no lifts are needed until you add the crossbar. Cross the t last so the connections stay smooth.
Does the E connect to the t?
Yes. In traditional cursive, capital E ends with a curl at the baseline that leads into the next letter, so the E and t are joined. Keep the h loop narrow and the t stem short, so the two are clearly different letters.
How do I write th in cursive?
Write the t as a short stem and exit along the baseline, then rise to the top line for the h loop. Draw the t crossbar last, a short line that sits across the stem. Write the crossbar level and about as wide as the h loop, then your pen is free to dot or flourish.
