"Layla" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Layla has an L at the start and a lowercase l in the middle, with a y that drops below the line between the first a and the l. That makes the name fun to write: tall loops, a drop below the line, then an a to finish.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Layla" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Layla

  • La: The L curl rises into the a. Close the oval and retrace.
  • ay: The a exits at the baseline into the y, which starts with an overcurve, slants down and rises, then drops below the baseline.
  • yl: The y loop closes at the baseline and rises into the l, which has a tall narrow loop.
  • la: The l exits into the final a, which closes at the top and finishes with a tail.

Tricky spots

  • y loop: Keep the loop narrow and closed at the baseline.
  • Two tall loops: The L and l should be different sizes. The capital is bigger.
  • Two a letters: Keep both ovals closed and the same size.

The capital L

Capital L is a big looped stroke that finishes with a curl at the baseline and connects into the a. Keep the capital about twice the height of the lowercase letters, and make the loop generous.

Layla as a signature

The capital L and the y loop give you two natural flourishes. Keep the middle compact and finish with a rising tail on the last a.

Short forms of Layla

Layla has no common short form, so most people use the full five letters.

As a tattoo

The y descender needs space below the line, and the loops should be spaced so they do not merge. Keep the l loop open.

Printable practice sheet

Trace the grey letters, then write your own on the empty lines. Prints on one page (Letter or A4).

Copy-paste versions of Layla

Script ℒ𝒶𝓎𝓁𝒶 and bold script 𝓛𝓪𝔂𝓵𝓪 are generated by code from the Unicode mathematical script blocks, so you can paste either one anywhere that accepts Unicode text. The capital L in Layla is the one borrowed glyph, ℒ (U+2112), and the two a's, the y and the lowercase l all come from the main script block. Because the odd letter sits right at the start, any font mismatch shows up on the first character. If the L looks off on your device, switch to the bold script version, which is uniform.

Layla in cursive: questions

How do you write Layla in cursive?
Write a looped capital L, then an a, a y with a descender loop, a tall lowercase l and a final a. Every letter connects, so the whole name can be one continuous stroke. Keep the y loop narrow so it does not touch the line below, and make both a ovals closed and the same size.
How do you write y in cursive?
Start the y with an overcurve, slant down to the baseline, rise to the midline and then drop a straight stroke below the baseline into a loop that closes back at the baseline. In Layla the y sits between the a and the tall l, so leave a little room under the name for the descender and keep the loop narrow.
Does the L connect to the a?
Yes. Capital L ends with a curl that leads directly into the next letter, so the first a follows without a lift. The capital and the later lowercase l are both loops, but they should differ in size: the capital reaches higher, and the lowercase l stops at the usual ascender height.
