"Sebastian" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Sebastian is nine letters with a tall b at the front, a t in the middle and a run of i, a, n at the end. It looks long but breaks into Seb-as-tian. The capital S does not connect, so the name starts with a small decision about spacing.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Sebastian" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Sebastian

  • Se: After the lift, write the e as a small loop and exit along the baseline.
  • eb: The e rises into the b, which has a tall stem and a bowl at the baseline. Keep the loop narrow.
  • ba: The b finishes at the baseline and the exit leads into the a. Close the oval.
  • as: The a exits into the s, a small rising stroke with a tiny tail.
  • st: The s leads into the t, a short stem. Add the crossbar after the word.
  • ti: The t exits at the baseline into the i. Dot it at the end.
  • ia: The i exits low at the baseline into the a, so keep the dot for last.
  • an: The a exits at the baseline into the final n, so close the oval first.

Tricky spots

  • Crossing the t: Add the crossbar after the name is finished.
  • The b: Close the bowl at the baseline so it does not look like an h.
  • Small letters at the end: i, a and n are all small. Keep them the same height.

The capital S

Capital S is a curve that begins with a small loop at the top, swings down and across to a point, and finishes on the baseline in a small curl. It does not connect, so lift and begin the e next to the curl.

Sebastian as a signature

Many writers keep the S and the b clear and run the rest as a wave. Cross the t with a long bar that finishes the name. Dot the i, since otherwise tia can look like a row of stems.

Short forms of Sebastian

Seb is a common short form and Bastian is also used. Seb is only the S, e and b, so it is a good practice for the first part of the name.

As a tattoo

Sebastian is long, so size the tattoo to keep the small letters apart. The t crossbar should not touch the i dot. Seb is a shorter option.

Copy-paste versions of Sebastian

Script 𝒮ℯ𝒷𝒶𝓈𝓉𝒾𝒶𝓃 and bold script 𝓢𝓮𝓫𝓪𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓪𝓷 are generated by code from the Unicode mathematical script blocks, so you can paste either one anywhere that accepts Unicode text. Sebastian has a single stand-in, the e (ℯ, U+212F) in second position right after the capital 𝒮, and the other eight letters are standard script. With nine characters it is the longest name in this set, so check any field limit that counts code points. Bold script skips the substitution.

Sebastian in cursive: questions

How do you write Sebastian in cursive?
Write a capital S, lift, then e, b, a, s, t, i, a, n. All lowercase letters connect. Cross the t and dot the i after the name is finished. The ti and ia in the middle are the places where the strokes crowd, so keep the spacing even.
Does the capital S connect?
In traditional cursive it does not. The capital S ends with a small curl on the baseline, so you lift before the e and begin it close beside the curl. The gap should be about one letter wide. A larger gap makes the name look like two words, and a smaller one lets the e collide with the S.
How do I write the tia in Sebastian?
Write a short t, exit along the baseline into the i, then an a. Cross the t and dot the i afterwards, so the strokes stay smooth. Doing both last means the n at the end flows from the a without interruption.
