How to Write blessed in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"blessed" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Blessed packs a bridge letter, two loops, a double s and a retraced d into seven letters. Begin with the b and its high exit into the l, because that bridge sets the height for everything after it. The double s in the middle is the other test, and the final ed asks the e to hand off to a d.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "blessed" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in blessed

  • bl: The b leaves from its checkstroke with a bridge that rises steeply into the l loop. Keep the l loop the same height as the b loop, and do not drop to the baseline between them.
  • le: The l comes down to the baseline and its exit rises to the midline for the e. Make the e visibly shorter than the l or the two loops look the same.
  • ss: The first s closes on the baseline and its exit rises straight to the peak of the second. Keep both peaks the same height and the tips pointed so they do not flatten into a wave.
  • ed: The e exits on the baseline and goes straight into the d lead-in. Close the d oval before pulling the stem up to the top line, and retrace the stem down.

Tricky spots

  • The b bridge: The b is one of four letters that exit high. The bridge into l has to rise, not run flat, or the l loop shrinks and the first four letters look cramped.
  • Double s: Two pointed peaks side by side can look like a zigzag. Give each s its own closing stroke and the same width.
  • Two e letters: The word has an e after the l and another before the d. Keep both loops open and the same size, since a closed e looks like an i in the middle of the word.

Capitals

Blessed is usually written lowercase, as in the common hashtag and caption use, but you can capitalise it as Blessed at the start of a line or on a sign. The capital B has a straight stem and two bumps with a small loop where they meet, and it does not connect to the l, so lift after the lower bump and begin the l near its base. Lowercase b joins through its checkstroke and bridge.

Variations and styles

Home signs and Bible-verse prints often set blessed in a bold flowing hand with a tall b and d, and a long exit stroke from the final d that underlines the word. In a signature-style version the bl joins can be pushed into one loop. Calligraphy pens give each s a thin upstroke and a thick downstroke, which lights up the double s. Pair the word with a small cross, dove or heart if the context is spiritual.

As a tattoo

Seven letters and several loops mean size matters. Letters 1.5 cm or taller keep the open e loops from filling in, and a small gap between the two s peaks keeps the pair readable. Ask the artist to keep the ascending loops of b, l and d at one height. A fine-line blessed on the collarbone or wrist should be traced from a printed stencil, not freehand.

Copy-paste versions of blessed

Script 𝒷𝓁ℯ𝓈𝓈ℯ𝒹 has two borrowed letters, both the same one: ℯ (U+212F) for e, appearing twice, so the e letters can look different from 𝒷, 𝓁, 𝓈 and 𝒹. Bold script 𝓫𝓵𝓮𝓼𝓼𝓮𝓭 comes from one block and matches. Capital ℬ𝓁ℯ𝓈𝓈ℯ𝒹 adds ℬ (U+212C) for B. Because the e appears twice, the borrowed letter is very noticeable in this word.

blessed in cursive: questions

How do you write blessed in cursive?
Write a tall b with a short checkstroke, send the bridge up into an l loop, then add e, s, s, e and d in one flow. The two s letters should be pointed and the same size, and the final d needs a closed oval and a retraced stem. Lift only at the end of the word.
Why does my cursive blessed look like blossed?
The e after the l is probably too small or closed, so it reads like an o. Keep e open and shorter than l, with its loop at the midline. If the b bridge sags, the l will also shrink and the first three letters become one indistinct shape.
Is blessed capitalised in cursive?
Not unless it begins a sentence or heads a sign. Lowercase blessed is common in captions and decor. If you want a capital, remember that cursive capital B has two bumps, does not connect to the l and needs a visible space before the l loop begins.
Does copy-paste cursive blessed look right in captions?
Mostly, but the borrowed script e appears twice, so some fonts show it slightly different. Bold script avoids that. As with any fancy Unicode, screen readers may read each letter out, so you may want to keep key hashtags and meanings in plain text too.
