How to Write Daughter in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Daughter" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Daughter is a long word with a silent gh in the middle, and in cursive that pair is the main challenge. The g has a descender and the h has a tall loop, and the two sit side by side. A looped capital D at the start and a crossed t near the end complete a word that looks lovely on gifts.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Daughter" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Daughter

  • Da: The capital D begins with a looped base and finishes with a long return stroke. Lift after the bowl and start the a just beside it, leaving a gap narrower than the a. Keep the a small and closed.
  • au: The a exits at the baseline and rises into the u. The u has two sharp points at the top, so keep the downstrokes short and parallel.
  • ug: The u closes at the baseline and rises into the g bowl. Close the bowl, drop the stem below the line and loop left.
  • gh: The g loop returns to the baseline and rises straight into the tall h loop. Keep the h loop narrow and the hump round.
  • ht: The h's hump lands on the baseline, and the exit then rises into the t's stem. Keep the t short and cross it after the word is complete.
  • er: Once the h loop is closed, the e runs low and rises to the shoulder of the closing r. Finish with a short upturn.

Tricky spots

  • The gh pair: The g tail drops below the line and the h loop rises above it. Keep both narrow so they do not collide, and close the g loop before starting the h.
  • u versus a: The a is a closed oval and the u has two sharp points. Do not let the u close at the top, or it reads as an a.
  • The crossed t: Cross the t at the end, above the midline. Make the bar short so it does not touch the h loop.

Capitals

Use a capital D when daughter is a name or at the start of a sentence. The capital D has a looped base and a long return stroke, and it does not join: lift after the bowl and start the a close beside it. Lowercase daughter is easier, and the d is a bowl with a retraced stem.

Variations and styles

For a gift, write daughter with a tall D and a small heart over the final r. A signature-style version joins each letter in one stroke. A pointed pen gives the D and g heavy downstrokes and thin upstrokes.

As a tattoo

Daughter is long, so give it at least 2 cm of height and a clear gap between the g and h. The g loop and the u points close up first, so ask for open shapes and check the stencil.

Copy-paste versions of Daughter

Daughter in script is 𝒟𝒶𝓊ℊ𝒽𝓉ℯ𝓇 and in bold script 𝓓𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓮𝓻. Regular script borrows ℊ (U+210A) for the g and ℯ for e, which can look a different weight from the other letters. Bold script has no borrowed letters and always matches.

Daughter in cursive: questions

How do you write daughter in cursive?
Write a capital D, lift, then a small closed a, a u, a g with a closed bowl and descender, a tall h, a t and a final er. The gh pair is the hardest part, so slow down there. Cross the t at the end, once the whole word is on the page.
Why is the gh hard in cursive?
The g descends below the line and the h rises above it, so the pair spans three zones in two strokes. Keep both loops narrow and closed, and let the g's exit climb to the h's first upstroke. If the loops swell, the pair collides with the lines above and below.
Should daughter start with a capital D?
Only at the start of a sentence or when it is used as a name, as in Love you, Daughter. After my or our, lowercase is correct and easier to write. A capital D also needs a lift before the a, so lowercase gives you one continuous line from start to finish.
Can I copy daughter in cursive text?
Yes, use the script or bold script versions above. Plain script borrows ℊ for the g and ℯ for the e, so bold script looks more even. They work in most apps, but screen readers may read them letter by letter, so keep important details in plain text as well.
