How to Write Family in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Family" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Family is a six-letter word with a trap in the middle: the a, m, i and l pack a lot of upright strokes into a small space. Write them with even spacing and distinct heights, and the word is lovely. The capital F is traditionally a separate stroke, and the y at the end drops a loop beneath the line, which is a good place for a flourish.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Family" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Family

  • am: The a exits on the baseline and rolls straight into the first overcurve of the m. Let the exit rise into the hump rather than making a point, or the m gains an extra bump.
  • mi: The m finishes with an undercurve into the point of the i. Keep the m humps rounded and the i point sharp, so the last hump does not melt into the i.
  • il: The i exits on the baseline and rises into the l loop. Make the i short and the l tall, so the contrast tells the reader which is which.
  • ly: The l comes down to the baseline and the y starts with an overcurve hump, then drops into a loop below. Keep the y tail as long as the l loop is tall, so the ending feels balanced.

Tricky spots

  • The a-m-i-l run: Four narrow letters in a row look like a picket fence. Keep the spacing equal, count the three m humps, and make the i point and l loop clearly different in height.
  • Capital F: The F has a wavy cap, a hooked stem and a crossbar. Write the cap, then the stem, then the crossbar last, and lift before the a because F does not join.
  • The y tail: The tail crosses the baseline and loops back. If it is too long, it hits the line below; too short, and the y looks like a g.

Capitals

Capitalise Family at the start of a sentence or for a sign such as Family, where it works as a title. The traditional capital F has a wavy top stroke, a stem that curves to the left at the baseline and a short crossbar, and it does not connect to the next letter. In running text or on a plaque that reads our family, lowercase keeps the word light and keeps the rhythm of the m and the y.

Variations and styles

On a family sign or wedding gift, a large capital F with a curl that extends to the right makes a good opening. Signature-style family often runs into the y tail, which can be extended to underline the whole word. Calligraphy pens give the l and y loops graceful thin upstrokes. On a framed print, the word can be stacked with a name or date beneath so the y tail frames the line below.

As a tattoo

Family has six letters and a descender, so give it width: letters about 1.5 cm tall, with at least 2 mm between the narrow strokes of a, m, i and l. Fine-line ink tends to close up fastest where upright strokes are packed, so ask the artist to keep the gaps and the humps of the m open. The tail of the y makes a good place to add a small symbol.

Script ℱ𝒶𝓂𝒾𝓁𝓎 borrows one capital letter: ℱ (U+2131) for F, which can look different from 𝒶, 𝓂, 𝒾, 𝓁 and 𝓎 beside it. There are no borrowed lowercase letters in the word, as it has no e, g or o. Bold script 𝓕𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓵𝔂 comes from one block and matches throughout. Lowercase 𝒻𝒶𝓂𝒾𝓁𝓎 has no exceptions at all.

Family in cursive: questions

How do you write family in cursive?
Write a capital F, lift, then start a, m, i, l and y in one joined sequence. The a, m and i each exit on the baseline, the l makes a tall loop, and the y ends with a loop below the line. Add the dot over the i last. Keep spacing even so the narrow letters in the middle stay readable.
Why does the middle of family look like a row of lines?
The letters a, m, i and l all contain straight downstrokes. If the spacing is uneven or the m humps are flat, they merge. Round the m humps, give the i a clear point and keep the l loop tall, and each downstroke will become a recognisable part of its letter.
How do you make the capital F in cursive?
Draw a wavy stroke across the top line, then a stem that begins near the cap, curves down and ends with a hook to the left at the baseline. Add a short crossbar through the middle of the stem. It is usually written in three strokes, and the pen lifts before the next letter.
Is there a good cursive family tattoo with the y tail?
Yes. The y tail is a natural place for a small flourish or a heart. Use lowercase or a capital F, keep letters around 1.5 cm tall and leave the tail room to loop so it does not fill in. Have the artist draw it freehand or stencil before inking.
