How to Write God Is Good in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
God Is Good is a three-word phrase with a capital at the start of each word, so you have three separate capitals to manage and two spaces. That is the real challenge: the lowercase letters are simple, but the pace shifts at every capital. It is a common phrase for signs, kitchen art and Bible journals, and it looks best when the two G's match.

Letter by letter
Each distinct letter in "God Is Good" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.
The joins in God Is Good
- Go: Capital G is a tall narrow loop that finishes at the baseline and does not join. Start the o just right of the G's end at the midline and keep it round.
- od: The o ends with a bridge at the top that becomes the d's first stroke. Close the d oval, then climb to the stem and retrace down. Make the d stem about the height of the G.
- Is: The capital I is its own shape, so lift and start the s just right of the I's final stroke. The s is small and pointed, with a short exit curl at the end.
- oo: In Good, the first o exits with a high bridge into the second o, which begins at the top. Keep the bridge short and level so the two o's sit at the same height.
Tricky spots
- Three capitals: G, I and G each begin a word, so keep their height and slant consistent. If one capital is bigger the line looks lopsided. Practise G-I-G on the guide line before writing the phrase.
- Word spacing: Leave about one o wide between words. In a short phrase it is easy to squeeze the gap, which makes it read as GodIsGood. Pencil the spaces first if you are making a sign.
- Double o: The two o's in Good must be closed and the same size. If the bridge between them is too long, the pair reads as oo with a hook.
Capitals
Each word in God Is Good is capitalised, so the phrase has three capitals, and God is capitalised even in a lowercase sentence. None of the capitals join to the following letter in school cursive, so expect a small lift after each. If you prefer a flowing line, write a lowercase phrase like god is good, but many people capitalise God for reverence.
Variations and styles
God Is Good works nicely in a stacked layout with God large and Is Good smaller beneath, or in one line with a swash from the last d. Add a cross, a heart or a sun above the I. In calligraphy, thicken the G stems and the d stems. For a mirror or kitchen sign, add a small flourish under the line.
As a tattoo
God Is Good is a long phrase, so it needs a wide area such as the forearm, ribs or collarbone. Keep letters at least 8 mm tall and space the words clearly, since small text can blur the o's. A stencil is essential here to see how the three capitals sit.
