How to Write Husband in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Husband" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Husband has a capital H up front, a u and an n that look alike, and a b and a d with tall stems at either end of the middle. The sb join is the one that surprises people, because the s has to climb into a tall loop. Keep the lowercase letters small and the stems tall.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Husband" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Husband

  • Hu: The capital H crossbar swings right and leads into the u. The u has two sharp points at the top and a closing stroke, so keep the downstrokes short and parallel.
  • us: The u exits at the baseline and rises to the small peak of the s. Keep the peak pointed and the closing stroke short.
  • sb: The s exits at the baseline and climbs straight into the tall b loop. The b has a stem that retraces down and finishes with a small checkstroke at the midline.
  • ba: The b checkstroke ends at the midline, so the a starts high. Close the a at the top and leave a short exit.
  • an: The a exits at the baseline and rises into the n hump. Keep the hump round and the downstroke parallel to the a stem.
  • nd: The n exits at the baseline and rises into the d bowl. Close the bowl and retrace the stem up and down in a tall line.

Tricky spots

  • u versus n: Both letters are short downstrokes. A u has two sharp points at the top and a closing stroke. An n has rounded humps. Keep each shape distinct or the word reads as hnsband.
  • The b checkstroke: The b ends at the midline with a small checkstroke. The a that follows begins high, so keep the checkstroke short and level.
  • The d stem: Retrace the d stem straight up and down. A loop makes it an l.

Capitals

Capitalise husband at the start of a sentence or when used as a title. The capital H is two stems and a looped crossbar. Lowercase husband is easier, with a plain h that has a tall loop and a hump.

Variations and styles

For an anniversary gift, write husband with a tall, slanted H and a small heart. A signature-style version joins every letter in one stroke. A broad-edged pen gives the H, b and d heavy downstrokes and thin upstrokes.

As a tattoo

Husband is a long word, so give it room: at least 2 cm of height, a clear gap between the u and s, and an open a and d bowl. Ask the artist to draw it freehand or stencil it, then check it.

Only the capital is borrowed here: ℋ (U+210B) opens ℋ𝓊𝓈𝒷𝒶𝓃𝒹, while the six lowercase letters are ordinary math script, so any mismatch is confined to the first glyph. In lowercase, husband needs no substitutes at all. Bold script 𝓗𝓾𝓼𝓫𝓪𝓷𝓭 is uniform from end to end.

Husband in cursive: questions

How do you write husband in cursive?
Write a capital H, then u, s, a tall b, an a, an n hump and a d with a retraced stem. Each letter joins at the baseline except b to a, which joins at the midline, so the a starts high. Nothing needs dotting or crossing, because husband has no i or t, which makes it a clean word to write in one pass.
Why does my cursive husband look odd?
The u and n are probably too similar. A u has two sharp points at the top and a closing stroke, while an n has round humps and no closing stroke. Keep both distinct, and check that the sb join climbs into a tall b loop instead of a short bump.
Should husband start with a capital H?
Only at the start of a sentence or when it is used as a title or term of address. Lowercase husband is simpler, because the h starts with a tall loop and runs straight into the u. On a gift or tattoo the capital H gives a stronger start, and it connects to the u through its crossbar.
Can I copy husband in cursive text?
Yes, copy the script or bold script versions above. They work in most apps, but they are Unicode characters rather than a font, so screen readers may read them letter by letter, and some older devices show boxes. For printed gifts, hand-write the word or use a real script font instead.
