T in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
T is a bar over a stem, and the bar is a natural place to show off. It can extend into arrows on both sides, droop at the ends like a banner or lift into a crown. The stem is the anchor, so it is usually thick and simple. In a word, a wide T bar can shelter the neighbouring letter and become a link, which is why T is a favourite for starting or finishing a piece.

How to draw a graffiti capital T
- 1Draw a leaning stem and a top bar that crosses it slightly above its top, longer on one side than the other.
- 2Tilt the bar upward at the right end, so the T seems to lift like a flag.
- 3Thicken the bar and the stem to the same width, or make the stem a little heavier to anchor the letter.
- 4Outline the body and trim the two inner corners where the bar meets the stem with small diagonal cuts.
- 5Tip both ends of the bar with arrows or spikes, fill, highlight the top edge of the bar and add a block under it.
Tip: Let the bar overshoot the stem by different amounts on each side. A perfectly centred T looks like a signpost, while an off-centre bar looks drawn.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase t
- 1Draw a tall stem leaning forward and cross it with a short bar at x-height.
- 2Thicken both, keeping the bar as thick as the stem.
- 3Give the bottom of the stem a curve to the right, like a small hook, to lead into the next letter.
- 4Outline and fill, leaving the bar ends square or tipped with tiny arrows.
- 5Add a highlight along the top of the bar and a block under it.
Tip: A lowercase t is shorter than the other ascenders, so keep its stem lower than that of an l or a b.
What makes T awkward or easy
T is a high-contrast letter: wide on top and narrow below. The wide bar creates a big gap under each arm, which in a word looks like a hole unless the neighbours move in. The stem is only one stroke, so it can look too thin beside the bar. The best treatments widen the stem, shorten the bar slightly or let the neighbours tuck under the arms.
Variations
A tag T is a cross made in two strokes, often with a long swoop. A throw-up T is a fat bar and a fat stem, outlined once. A piece T may have a crown above the bar, arrows on each end and a block. Wildstyle T stretches the bar into a ribbon that loops through the next letters.
Common mistakes with graffiti T
The bar is centred exactly on the stem.
Move it off centre so one arm is longer than the other.
The stem is thin under a heavy bar.
Thicken the stem until it carries the weight of the bar.
The gap under the arms is empty and the word looks broken.
Move the neighbouring letters closer, so they tuck under the arms.
The bar is perfectly horizontal.
Tilt it upward at the right so the letter has movement.
Ideas for graffiti T
T starts names such as Tia, Theo and Tyler, and words like Tag, Tough and Throw. Try a sheet of Ts with ten bar treatments: crowned, drooping, arrowed, looped and split. It is a quick way to build a collection of terminal ideas.

Graffiti T you can copy and paste
Unicode does not have a graffiti alphabet. The nearest copy-paste forms are bold gothic 𝕿 𝖙, black squares 🆃 and bubble letters Ⓣ ⓣ. They are fixed glyphs, so the bar cannot be stretched or tilted.
