O in Different Fonts

O started life as a Phoenician eye, and it is the single most copied homoglyph in Unicode. Here is every styled O, including the two that behave strangely: script โ„ด and the emoji ๐Ÿ…พ.

Style a whole word in the lettering generator โ†’

From an eye to a vowel

The Phoenician letter ayin meant โ€œeye,โ€ and the sign was a simple circle, sometimes with a dot for the pupil. In Phoenician it stood for a throat consonant that Greek didnโ€™t have, so the Greeks reused the shape for a vowel sound: O. Later Greek split the sound into two letters, which Byzantine grammarians named o mikron (โ€œsmall oโ€) and o mega (โ€œbig oโ€). Latin took only the first, and the round O has barely changed shape in nearly three thousand years.

Why O is the riskiest letter to style

A circle is a circle in any script, so O has more near-identical twins than almost any other letter:

Looks like O Actually is Code point
ะž Cyrillic capital O U+041E
ฮŸ Greek capital Omicron U+039F
0 the digit zero U+0030
โญ• heavy large circle emoji U+2B55

None of these are โ€œfonts.โ€ They are separate characters, and swapping one in is a classic way to fake a username or web address. If you want a styled O that still counts as an O, use one of the math alphabets below. They fold back to a plain O under Unicode NFKC normalization, which some systems use to compare names.

The O styles and their quirks

Script O and the borrowed lowercase

Regular script gives you capital ๐’ช from the math block but lowercase โ„ด from the much older Letterlike Symbols block. It is one of only three lowercase script letters borrowed this way (with โ„ฏ and โ„Š). In some fonts โ„ด sits a touch smaller than ๐’ถ or ๐“ƒ next to it. If that bothers you, switch to bold script ๐“ž ๐“ธ, which is a complete, consistent set. Our cursive text generator shows both side by side.

Bubble, square and the emoji problem

โ“„ โ“ž come from Enclosed Alphanumerics and display as plain outlined circles almost everywhere. The black square ๐Ÿ…พ is different: it is an emoji, so iOS, Android and Windows often draw it as a coloured button. The plain outlined square ๐Ÿ„พ doesnโ€™t have that problem.

Small, tiny and flipped

  • Small caps: แด (U+1D0F)
  • Superscript: แต’ and แดผ
  • Subscript: โ‚’, one of the 17 letters that has one
  • Upside down: O and o, unchanged, because a circle looks the same rotated
  • Mirror: O and o, also unchanged

That symmetry makes O useful in upside-down text: it never looks wrong when flipped.

O in everyday writing

O accounts for about 7.5% of letters in English text, the fourth most common after e, t and a. It also carries meaning on its own: the O in XOXO is a hug, โ€œOโ€ is the vocative in poetry (โ€œO Captain! my Captain!โ€), and ร˜ is a separate letter in Danish and Norwegian, not a styled O. The currency style uses ร˜ for O, so anyone reading Scandinavian text sees a different vowel.

Choosing an O for a monogram

A round O works as a frame. Many monogram layouts put a large O around or behind the other initials. In plain text, the outline ๐•† or the bold gothic ๐•บ give the most presence on their own. For a handwritten look, see how a cursive O is formed; its closed oval and little top loop are what the script characters imitate.

O in different fonts: questions

Why does the black square O show up as a red emoji?
๐Ÿ…พ (U+1F17E) is one of the four negative squared letters, with ๐Ÿ…ฐ ๐Ÿ…ฑ and ๐Ÿ…ฟ, that were given emoji status because of their use on Japanese phones, where ๐Ÿ…พ marks blood type O. Many devices render it in colour while the neighbouring black square letters stay monochrome, so a word like ๐Ÿ…ท๐Ÿ…พ๐Ÿ…ผ๐Ÿ…ด can look uneven.
Why does script lowercase o look different from the other script letters?
The script โ„ด is SCRIPT SMALL O (U+2134) from the Letterlike Symbols block, encoded long before the rest of the math script alphabet. The math block left a hole at that position, so generators borrow โ„ด. It is drawn by a different font, which can make it look slightly smaller or lighter. Bold script ๐“ธ has no borrowed letters, so it matches its neighbours.
Can I use a Cyrillic or Greek O in my username?
You can type them, but ะž (Cyrillic, U+041E) and ฮŸ (Greek Omicron, U+039F) look identical to a Latin O while being different characters. That is exactly how lookalike phishing domains work, so many platforms block or flag mixed-script names. People also won't find you by searching the normal spelling.
What does XOXO mean, and which letter is the hug?
In XOXO the X stands for a kiss and the O for a hug, usually explained as two arms wrapped around someone. It is a sign-off in messages and cards. You can style it like any other text, for example โ“โ“„โ“โ“„ in bubble letters, and it stays readable because both letters are simple shapes.
