P in Different Fonts

P comes from a Phoenician mouth, shares its shape with a Greek R, and owns a parking emoji. Every styled P is below, with notes on the ones that cause trouble.

Style a whole word in the lettering generator โ†’

A mouth, a hook and a loop

The Phoenician letter pe meant โ€œmouth.โ€ Greek turned it into pi, written ฮ  with two legs, which is still the Greek letter today. Western Greek and Etruscan writers used a version with the right-hand stroke bent into a hook, and the Romans gradually closed that hook into the loop of our P.

That route left a lasting mix-up. The Greek letter that looks like P is rho, ฮก, which sounds like R. Cyrillic inherited the same shape for its R, ะ . So the most familiar P-shape in Athens or Moscow is not a P at all.

The P forms that misbehave

The black square P is an emoji

Of the 26 black square letters, only ๐Ÿ…ฐ ๐Ÿ…ฑ ๐Ÿ…พ and ๐Ÿ…ฟ have emoji status. On most phones ๐Ÿ…ฟ is drawn as a coloured parking sign, so a name like ๐Ÿ…ฟ๐Ÿ…ด๐Ÿ†ƒ๐Ÿ…ด can come out with a bright first letter and three monochrome ones. If you want an even look, use the outlined squared ๐Ÿ„ฟ or the black bubble ๐Ÿ…Ÿ instead.

Double-struck P and its three meanings

The double-struck capital is one of the seven letters (C, H, N, P, Q, R, Z) where blackboard bold came from the older Letterlike Symbols block, not the math alphabet. Mathematicians use โ„™ for the primes, for probability, and for projective space, which is why it was encoded early. As decoration it is perfectly safe: it renders on every modern system and folds back to a plain P under NFKC.

Flipping and mirroring

Turn a lowercase p upside down and you get an ordinary d; mirror it and you get q. One popular explanation of the phrase โ€œmind your pโ€™s and qโ€™sโ€ is that printers had to tell the two apart in loose metal type, where every letter is cast backwards; the origin is disputed, but the confusion is real. The capital has no Latin upside-down form, so generators borrow ิ€ (U+0500) from Cyrillic. Mirror P is ๊Ÿผ, an epigraphic letter from Latin Extended-D.

How common is P

P makes up about 1.9% of English letters, far less than n or r, but it starts a lot of words: pro-, pre-, post- and photo- all begin with it. That makes P a frequent first initial, so it is worth picking a capital you like on its own.

P for names and monograms

For a single capital, ๐•ป (bold gothic) or ๐“Ÿ (bold script) give the strongest silhouette. The bowl of P sits high, so in a three-letter monogram it reads best in the outer positions rather than the centre. If you want to learn the handwritten version, the cursive P lesson breaks down the capitalโ€™s loop and the lowercase descender.

To use a fancy P across a whole bio or nickname, the Instagram fonts page lists which fields accept these characters, and the bubble text generator covers the circled โ“… โ“Ÿ set.

P in different fonts: questions

Why does the black square P look like a parking sign?
๐Ÿ…ฟ (U+1F17F, NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P) doubles as the parking emoji, so phones usually draw it as a blue or coloured button. It is one of four black square letters with emoji status, along with ๐Ÿ…ฐ ๐Ÿ…ฑ and ๐Ÿ…พ. If you need a P that matches the rest of a black square word, it may not, depending on the device.
What does the double-struck P mean in math?
โ„™ (U+2119) is used for the set of prime numbers in number theory, for probability (โ„™(A) is the probability of event A), and for projective space in geometry, written โ„™โฟ. Which meaning applies depends on the field. It lives in the Letterlike Symbols block, so it is one of the borrowed letters in the double-struck alphabet.
Is the Greek letter that looks like P the same letter?
No. ฮก is GREEK CAPITAL LETTER RHO (U+03A1) and it is pronounced like R, as is the Cyrillic ะ  (U+0420). Both look exactly like a Latin P, which makes them common in spoofed usernames and domains. A name typed with either will not match a search for the normal P spelling.
What is the curly Weierstrass p symbol?
โ„˜ (U+2118) is the Weierstrass p, a calligraphic lowercase p used for the Weierstrass elliptic function. Its official Unicode name, SCRIPT CAPITAL P, is a known mistake that can't be changed because character names are permanent. Some fancy-text styles, including our Squiggle set, use it as a decorative p.
