Q in Different Fonts

Q is the awkward letter of fancy text. Unicode has no subscript q, and its small-cap and superscript q are too new for most fonts, so generators improvise. Here is every real styled Q, and what the stand-ins are.

A letter Greek dropped and Latin kept

Q goes back to the Phoenician qoph, a letter for a k-like sound made further back in the throat. Its original meaning is disputed. Early Greek borrowed it as koppa (ฯ˜), but most Greek alphabets dropped it because they didnโ€™t need two k sounds. Koppa survived only as the numeral for 90.

Latin had already picked it up through the Etruscans, and used it in one narrow job: writing k before a u sound. That habit is why English still pairs it with u in almost every native word.

The Q styles that exist

Double-struck โ„š ๐•ข
Monospace ๐š€ ๐šš

The math alphabets cover Q completely, and only the double-struck capital โ„š is borrowed from the Letterlike block. If you are styling a name with a Q in it, these are the sets where it will match its neighbours exactly.

The Q styles that donโ€™t exist

Q is the letter where you notice the gaps in Unicodeโ€™s โ€œsmallโ€ alphabets. Small caps, superscripts and subscripts were encoded for phonetics, and phoneticians rarely needed q. So:

  • Small caps: generators use วซ, a Latin o with an ogonek hook, because the official small capital ๊žฏ (U+A7AF, added in 2018) is missing from most fonts.
  • Superscript: a modifier small q, ๐žฅ (U+107A5), was added in Unicode 14 (2021) but is poorly supported. The usual substitute is แ‘ซ, borrowed from Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics.
  • Subscript: nothing at all. Unicode has subscript forms for only 17 letters (a e h i j k l m n o p r s t u v x), so a subscript word with q in it will leave the q full size.

If your text looks fine except for one odd q, this is why. Our small text generator shows these substitutes so you can decide whether they are close enough.

Flipped, mirrored and decorative Q

Upside down, a lowercase q becomes an ordinary b. The capital has no rotated Latin form, so generators use ฮŒ, a Greek capital omicron with an accent, whose tick sits roughly where a flipped Q tail would go. Mirroring q gives p, and a mirrored Q comes out as ฯ˜, which is the archaic Greek koppa, the very letter Q descends from, borrowed back as a lookalike.

Several decorative alphabets simply leave Q alone. The currency and accented styles both output a plain Q, because no currency symbol or accented letter looks enough like one. The Asian style uses ษŠ, a Latin q with a hook tail, rather than a CJK character.

Q in English text

Q is one of the rarest letters, roughly 0.1% of English text. Because it nearly always comes with a u, pick a matching style for both; U in different fonts has the full set. In word games that rarity is the point: Q is worth 10 points in Scrabble. For a monogram it is a strong choice precisely because few people share it. The tail is its signature, so pick a style that exaggerates it, such as ๐“  or ๐””, rather than the squared ๐Ÿ…€, where the tail almost disappears.

To see how the tail is drawn by hand, the cursive Q lesson walks through the capital and the lowercase descender stroke by stroke.

Q in different fonts: questions

Is there a small caps Q in Unicode?
Unicode 11.0 (2018) added ๊žฏ, LATIN LETTER SMALL CAPITAL Q (U+A7AF), but most phone and desktop fonts still don't include it, so it often shows as an empty box. For that reason most generators, ours included, use วซ (U+01EB, o with ogonek) instead. It reads as a small q in a line of small caps.
How do I type a superscript q?
There is one, ๐žฅ (U+107A5, MODIFIER LETTER SMALL Q), added in Unicode 14.0 (2021), but it has poor font support and often shows as a box. Generators substitute แ‘ซ (U+146B, CANADIAN SYLLABICS KE), a syllabics character that happens to look like a small raised q. It works visually, but a screen reader will announce it as a Canadian syllabic, not as q.
What does the double-struck Q mean?
โ„š (U+211A) stands for the rational numbers, every number you can write as a fraction of two integers. The letter is usually explained as coming from quotient. Like โ„•, โ„ค and โ„, it sits in the Letterlike Symbols block rather than with the other double-struck letters, because it was encoded first.
Why is Q almost always followed by U in English?
Latin wrote the kw sound as qu. After the Norman Conquest, scribes trained in French spelling replaced Old English cw with qu, so cwen became queen. Words without the u, such as qi, qat, Qatar and Iraq, are mostly borrowings from Chinese or Arabic transliterated with q. That is why qi became famous as a legal word-game play.
