"Jack" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Jack is four letters with one descender and one buckle. It is quick to write, but the capital J and the k each have their own shapes. Do those two well and the name looks sharp.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Jack" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Jack

  • Ja: The J tail rises into the a. Close the oval and retrace.
  • ac: The a exits at the baseline into the c. Keep it open.
  • ck: The c exits and rises into the k, which has a tall loop and a small buckle at the midline, then a kick to the baseline.

Tricky spots

  • k buckle: Make a small closed loop at the midline. If open, it looks like an h.
  • Open c: Leave the c open on the right so it does not become an o.

The capital J

Capital J has a narrow loop at the top, a long straight downstroke and a loop below the baseline, and it connects. The tail rises from the lower loop straight into the a. Leave room beneath the line.

Jack as a signature

Jack is short, so the signature version usually exaggerates the J: a big top loop and a descender that sweeps back under the name. Keep the k buckle so the name stays readable.

Short forms of Jack

Jack is already a short name, and Jax is occasionally used. Most people write the full four letters.

As a tattoo

The k buckle and the J descender are the details. Ask for enough size for the buckle to stay open and leave space under the line for the loop.

Printable practice sheet

Trace the grey letters, then write your own on the empty lines. Prints on one page (Letter or A4).

Copy-paste versions of Jack

Script 𝒥𝒶𝒸𝓀 and bold script 𝓙𝓪𝓬𝓴 are generated by code from the Unicode mathematical script blocks, so you can paste either one anywhere that accepts Unicode text. All four letters are standard script, so no borrowed glyph interrupts the string and the capital 𝒥 matches the lowercase letters on most devices. That makes Jack a safe, short name to paste into a bio or username. They remain symbols, not a font, so screen readers may spell them out.

Jack in cursive: questions

How do you write Jack in cursive?
Write a capital J with a descender loop, then a, c and k. The c stays open and the k has a tall loop with a small buckle and a kick at the baseline. Keep the J loop narrow so it stays clear of the line below, and the k buckle small but closed.
Does the J connect to the a?
Yes. The tail of the lower loop rises directly into the a, so no lift is needed after the J. Capital J is one of the connecting capitals in traditional cursive. Keep the J loop narrow so it clears the line below, and keep the a small so the J remains the tallest part of the name.
How do you make the k in cursive?
Start like an l with a tall loop, then add a small closed loop on the right at the midline and kick out to the baseline. Without a buckle the letter reads as an h, so take your time on that small loop.
