"Jackson" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Jackson is Jack with an extra syllable, so you get the ck pair and then a run of s, o, n. The k has a small buckle that can get lost, and the small s that follows has to squeeze in right after it.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Jackson" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Jackson

  • Ja: The J tail rises into the a oval. Close it and retrace.
  • ac: The a exits at the baseline into the c, which stays open on the right.
  • ck: The c exits at the baseline and rises into the k, which has a tall loop and a small buckle at the midline.
  • ks: The k finishes with a kick at the baseline and a short undercurve leads into the s, a small rising stroke.
  • so: The s exits into the o, which closes at the top and leaves with a bridge.
  • on: The bridge runs level into the n, which finishes with a short tail.

Tricky spots

  • The k buckle: Make the buckle a small closed loop at the midline. If it opens, the k looks like an h.
  • s after k: Keep the s small so it does not look like an l.
  • Long name: Check the size of the letters, since the name is seven letters.

The capital J

Capital J has a narrow loop at the top and a long descender loop below the baseline, and it connects. The tail rises from the lower loop into the a. Leave space under the line, and keep the top loop small.

Jackson as a signature

The J descender can swing under the name. Keep the k buckle visible and make the final n end with a flick. Shorten the s if you are writing fast.

Short forms of Jackson

Jack is the usual short form and Jax is also seen. Jack ends at the k, so the buckle is the last thing you write, and the extra son is dropped.

As a tattoo

The k buckle is small, so ask for a size that keeps it open. Leave room under the line for the J. Jack is a shorter option.

Copy-paste versions of Jackson

Script 𝒥𝒶𝒸𝓀𝓈ℴ𝓃 and bold script 𝓙𝓪𝓬𝓴𝓼𝓸𝓷 are generated by code from the Unicode mathematical script blocks, so you can paste either one anywhere that accepts Unicode text. Only the sixth letter, ℴ (U+2134), is borrowed from the Letterlike Symbols block. It sits in the s-o-n ending, so a lighter o can interrupt the line near the end of the name. The other six letters are regular script. Bold script has no borrowed letters, so it stays even.

Jackson in cursive: questions

How do you write Jackson in cursive?
Write a capital J with a descender loop, then a, c, k, s, o and n. The c stays open, the k has a small buckle and the o exits at the top into the n. Take your time with the middle, where c, k and s all need small, clear shapes.
How do you write ck in cursive?
Finish the c with a short exit and rise into the k, which has a tall loop, a small buckle at the midline and a kick at the baseline. The buckle sits at the midline, and the kick that follows leads into the s. Make it small, closed and distinct from the tall loop.
Is Jackson easier to write than Jack?
No. Jackson has the same start but adds s, o and n, which need small tidy strokes. Jack is shorter and quicker. Jack is the first four letters of Jackson, so practising one helps with the other. Jackson is longer, but the extra letters are all simple, so most of the effort goes into the ck pair.
