"Mia" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Mia has only three letters, and the capital M does most of the work. It has three downstrokes, an overcurve from the baseline, and an undercurve that carries into the i. The i and a that follow are small, so the name is tall at the front and light at the back, and its whole look depends on balancing those two.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Mia" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Mia

  • Mi: The M's final undercurve rises into the i's upstroke, so there is no lift. Keep the connection short and let the i be a sharp spike; dot it after you finish the name.
  • ia: After the i's downstroke, curve out with an undercurve and over into the a. The two small letters are close, so keep the i narrow and give the a space to close.

Tricky spots

  • Three humps in the capital: Capital M has three downstrokes, not two. Losing a stroke turns the capital into an N-like shape, so Mia becomes Nia. Count downstrokes as you write: down, down, down.
  • Size contrast: The M is tall and wide next to the tiny i and a. Make the capital about twice the lowercase height and no wider than it needs to be, so the word doesn't look front-heavy.
  • The final a exit: The final a is a closed oval with a short exit. Because it is the last letter, a longer exit or a small curl can finish the name, but a short plain exit keeps it tidy.

The capital M

Capital M starts just above the baseline with an overcurve, makes three slanted downstrokes joined by humps, and ends with an undercurve that leads into the i. It is a connecting capital, so Mia can be written without a lift. Keep the three downstrokes evenly spaced so the capital doesn't lean.

Mia as a signature

A three-letter name leaves room for style. Many people write a wide capital M with a long entry curl, then let the i and a shrink into a short line. The dot over the i can become a small flourish, as long as it stays clearly above the stem. Keep the final a closed so the ending doesn't read as u.

Short forms of Mia

Mia is already a short form used on its own, and the only common variants add letters, such as Mimi, which repeats the m and i. In cursive, Mimi would need two m's and two i's, so it takes up much more width.

As a tattoo

Mia works well as a small tattoo, but the lowercase letters are tiny next to the capital M. Keep the x-height at about 8 mm or more so the i and a stay open, and leave a gap above the stem for the dot. A short name suits a wrist or behind the ear.

Copy-paste versions of Mia

Copy-paste Mia in script is ℳ𝒾𝒶 and in bold script is 𝓜𝓲𝓪. Mia is only three letters, and one of them, the capital ℳ (U+2133), is borrowed from outside the main script block. The i and a are regular script characters. On a very short name the odd capital is the first thing people notice, so try the bold script version when the match matters, for example on a nameplate graphic.

Mia in cursive: questions

How do you write Mia in cursive?
Write a capital M with three humps, end it with an undercurve into a short i, then write a closed a. You can write the whole name without lifting the pen, then add the dot above the i at the end. Keep the M about twice the height of the small letters so the name stays balanced.
Does the M connect to the i in Mia?
Capital M ends in an undercurve, so it joins the next letter and Mia can be written in one motion. The exit stroke rises into the i's upstroke, so keep it short and sharp rather than letting it sweep out wide. If the connection is too long, the capital and the i drift apart and the little name looks stretched.
How many humps does a cursive capital M have?
Three, each with its own slanted downstroke. Count them as you write: down, down, down. If you make only two, the capital looks like an N and Mia is easily read as Nia. Keep the humps level and evenly spaced, and let the final stroke curve out into the undercurve that leads into the i.
Where does the dot on the i go in Mia?
Directly above the i's stem, and added after the whole name is written so the connected strokes stay unbroken. In a signature it can become a small circle or a short dash, but it should stay clearly above the stem and not drift toward the a, or a reader may take the name for a different word.
