P in Bubble Letters

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
A bubble P is a tall capsule with a round belly bolted onto its top half. The capital stays on the baseline and is mostly about getting the bowl to join the stem without a messy wedge. The lowercase p is trickier, because its stem drops below the baseline and the bowl sits alone at the top, so you need extra vertical space before you begin.

How to draw a bubble capital P
- 1Draw a thin skeleton: one vertical line for the stem, and a half-oval loop that leaves the top of the stem and returns to it at about the middle height.
- 2Inflate the stem into a tall capsule with a rounded top and a rounded bottom resting on the baseline, as thick as your other capital stems.
- 3Inflate the bowl as a thick curved tube leaving the stem top, sweeping right, and returning to the stem at mid height. It should look like a ring attached to the stem.
- 4Draw the hole inside the bowl as a smaller rounded shape, leaving the same ring thickness as the stem so the bowl does not turn out thin.
- 5Erase the overlap where bowl and stem merge, and soften the inner notch at the bottom of the bowl into a curve.
Tip: End the bowl a little above the halfway line, not below it. A bowl that reaches below the middle makes the P look top-heavy in a bad way and starts to resemble a B missing its lower half.
How to draw a bubble lowercase p
- 1Mark three guidelines: x-height, baseline and a descender line about as far below the baseline as the x-height is tall.
- 2Draw a thin skeleton of a stem running from the x-height line down to the descender line, and a round loop attached on the right side between the x-height and baseline.
- 3Inflate the stem as a long capsule that ends in a round tip on the descender line. Keep its thickness equal to the capital letters in the word.
- 4Inflate the bowl as a thick ring that meets the stem at the top and the baseline, leaving a small round hole in its centre.
- 5Erase the overlapping lines, then round the join between the lower bowl and the stem so a smooth inward curve remains.
Tip: Check that the bowl of lowercase p matches the size of your o. If it is smaller or bigger, the letter will feel like it belongs to a different alphabet.
What makes P awkward or easy
P is a letter of two parts that must feel like one balloon. The awkward area is the lower end of the bowl where it comes back to the stem; if you outline both shapes separately, a thin sliver of paper shows between them and ruins the inflated effect. Lowercase p adds the descender, which forces a taller line height and often causes collisions with letters on the next line of a poster. Plan the spacing first.
Variations
A graffiti P can have an oversized bowl with a drop shadow that fills the gap beneath it. For a glossy version, highlight the top of the bowl and the left edge of the stem. Kids can draw the P as a stick with a doughnut on top. An outline-only P is easy to colour in two tones, stem and bowl separately, and a 3D P looks best when the extrusion trails off to the lower right from both parts together.
Common mistakes with bubble P
A thin white wedge shows where the bowl meets the stem.
Draw the bowl and stem as one merged shape and erase any line that runs through the join before inking the outline.
The bowl reaches too low and the P looks like an unfinished B.
End the bowl at or just above the halfway line, and leave clear space between the bowl's bottom and the baseline.
Lowercase p's stem does not drop far enough, so it looks like a stubby o with a tail.
Use a descender guideline roughly as far below the baseline as the x-height is tall, and let the stem reach it.
The bowl's ring is thinner than the stem.
Measure the bowl outline with the same pencil width you used on the stem and widen the inner shape until they match.
Ideas for bubble P
P suits names like Priya, Peter and Paige, words like 'Party', 'Pizza' and 'Peace', and school labels for pencils or projects. Lowercase p is a good pairing with q for teaching mirror shapes, and capital P works as a monogram with its bowl framing a small decoration. On birthday banners, P is a good place to hide a balloon or lollipop inside the bowl.

Bubble P you can copy and paste
There are Unicode forms for P: the circled capital Ⓟ, the circled lowercase ⓟ and the black-circled capital 🅟. They paste as normal text into bios, comments and chats. Because they are encoded characters, they cannot be stretched, coloured inside, or given a descender the way a drawn bubble p can. Treat them as quick text decoration and drawing as artwork.
