Q in Bubble Letters
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
Q is O with a flourish, and the flourish is where a bubble Q lives or dies. In capital form the tail is a small extra balloon that crosses the bottom of the ring; in lowercase it is a descender hanging off the right side like the mirror of a p. Choose the tail first, because it decides how much space the letter needs and whether it reads as Q rather than O.

How to draw a bubble capital Q
- 1Draw a thin oval skeleton between top and baseline guides, exactly as you would for a capital O, and mark a spot at the lower right where the tail will start.
- 2Inflate the oval into a ring with an even thickness, drawing the outer curve first and the inner counter second.
- 3Pencil the tail as a short thin curve that begins inside the ring near the lower right and ends just outside it, pointing down and right.
- 4Inflate the tail into a small sausage-shaped bubble with a round end, drawn on top of the ring so it overlaps the ring's edge.
- 5Erase the part of the ring's outline that runs through the tail, and add a tiny gap or a darker outline to show which shape sits in front.
Tip: Keep the tail about as thick as half the ring. A tail as fat as the ring turns into a second letter, and a very thin tail looks like a scratch instead of part of the balloon.
How to draw a bubble lowercase q
- 1Draw guidelines for the x-height, baseline and descender, and sketch a thin circle between the first two.
- 2Draw a thin stem on the right side of the circle that runs from the x-height line down to the descender line.
- 3Inflate the circle into a ring and the stem into a long capsule, letting them merge along the right side of the bowl.
- 4Round the bottom of the stem into a half-circle on the descender line, or add a small kick to the right if you want a decorative tail.
- 5Erase the pencil lines where ring and stem overlap and leave a clear round counter inside the bowl.
Tip: Compare your lowercase q with your p. They should be mirror images in stem length and bowl size, which is the quickest way to spot a lopsided q.
What makes Q awkward or easy
The capital Q combines two difficulties, a perfect ring and a free-floating tail that overlaps it. The overlap is where drawings go wrong, because the ring's outline either runs through the tail or stops too early and leaves an ugly gap. Lowercase q is a mirrored p in construction, so its issue is the straight descender, which pulls the letter down and requires extra line spacing. Both forms demand a clear, open counter, because Q's counter is small enough to clog with shading.
Variations
Capital Q can have a swirl tail that curls like a pig tail, a straight diagonal tail like a lollipop stick, or a bubble tail made of two linked circles for a cartoon effect. For graffiti, stretch the tail far under the next letter. For lowercase, a single bold stem with a flat foot looks clean and printed. In 3D drawings, let the tail cast its own small shadow across the base of the ring.
Common mistakes with bubble Q
The tail starts outside the ring, so it looks like a stray mark.
Begin the tail inside the ring's thickness and let it cross the outline, so it clearly belongs to the letter.
The ring outline runs straight through the tail.
Erase the ring's outer line where the tail overlaps, then ink the tail's outline on top so it reads as the front shape.
Lowercase q looks like a g because the descender curves left.
Keep the descender straight and attached to the right of the bowl, and avoid a hook unless you want a deliberate decorative tail.
The counter is shaded so heavily that Q looks like a solid disc.
Keep shading to a thin crescent along one edge, and leave most of the counter as clear paper or a light colour.
Ideas for bubble Q
Q appears in Quinn, Queen and Quiz, and in 'Q&A' signs that need a friendly look. A bubble Q is a good place to add a tiny crown for royal themes, a magnifying glass for search, or a speech bubble for question boards. Teachers can pair it with u to show the usual 'qu' spelling pattern.

Bubble Q you can copy and paste
For Q the copy-paste forms are the circled capital Ⓠ, the circled lowercase ⓠ and the black-circled capital 🅠. They are Unicode characters, so you can paste them into text but cannot place a custom tail on them or fill their counter with colour. A drawn bubble Q lets you decide tail shape, ring thickness and shading, while the symbol is a fixed glyph from whichever font your device uses.
