How to Write Grandma in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Grandma" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Grandma is a favourite for gifts, cards and kitchen signs. It starts with a capital G, which is one of the trickier capitals, then runs through a short, even body. The d and the m in the middle are the tricky joins, because the d has a tall stem and the m has three humps that follow it.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Grandma" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Grandma

  • Gr: The capital G ends with a hook at the baseline. Lift there and start the r just beside it with a small upstroke and shoulder. Keep the r small and low, so the G dominates the word.
  • ra: The r shoulder drops to the baseline and climbs into the a. Close the a at the top and leave a short exit along the baseline.
  • an: The a's exit climbs into the n's hump. Keep the hump round, with the downstroke parallel to the a's stem, so the n does not turn into a u.
  • nd: The n ends at the baseline and rises into the d bowl. Close the bowl and retrace the stem up and down in a tall line, then give a short exit toward the m.
  • dm: The d exit climbs to the first hump of the m. Start the m with a short upstroke, then make three equal humps. If the m hump comes too soon, the d seems to run into it.
  • ma: The m exits at the baseline and rises into the final a. Close the a and finish with a short exit.

Tricky spots

  • Three humps in m: The m needs three equal humps with parallel downstrokes. Count them as you write. A two-hump m reads as n and the word becomes Grandna.
  • The d stem: Retrace the d stem straight up and down, with no loop. A looped d looks like an l and the word loses its shape.
  • Capital G: The G has a tall start and a changing direction. Practise it on its own and keep it the same slant as the lowercase letters.

Capitals

Capitalise Grandma when it is a name, as in Hi, Grandma, or at the start of a sentence. The capital G is a tall curve with a small hook and it does not join, so lift and start the r close beside it. When grandma is used as a common noun, lowercase is correct and easier to write.

Variations and styles

For a gift, write grandma in large letters with a soft slant and add a heart over the last a. A signature-style version joins every letter in one stroke and finishes with a long exit. A fine pen suits a framed print, while a brush pen gives a warmer, friendlier look.

Grandma in cursive: questions

How do you write grandma in cursive?
Write a capital G, lift, then a small r and a closed a, an n hump, a d with a tall stem, a three-hump m and a final a. After the lift following the G, each letter joins the next at the baseline, except the d into the m, which climbs to the first hump.
Why does my cursive m in grandma look like n?
You probably wrote only two humps. A cursive m has three humps with parallel downstrokes, and it follows a d whose exit has to rise to the first hump. Count the humps as you write, keep the spacing equal and keep the pen moving so the m does not collapse into an n.
Should grandma be capitalised?
When it is a name or a greeting, yes, as in Hi, Grandma. When it is a common noun, as in my grandma or the grandma next door, use lowercase. On a gift tag or kitchen sign, a capital G looks more intentional, and it gives you room for a small flourish.
Can I copy grandma in cursive text?
Yes, use the script or bold script versions above. Grandma has no borrowed Letterlike letters in plain script, so both versions match well. They are Unicode symbols and work in most apps, but screen readers may read them oddly, so add a plain-text version where it matters.
