D in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
D is a spine with one big bowl, and it is among the heaviest letters in any graffiti alphabet. Its simplicity is the reason it works for throw-ups, and also why it looks dull if you do nothing to it. Variety comes from how the bowl bulges, where the spine leans, and what happens at the two corners where the bowl meets the spine. Used well, D is the anchor of a word.

How to draw a graffiti capital D
- 1Draw a vertical spine that leans a little to the right, then sketch the bowl as one large curve connecting the top and bottom of the spine.
- 2Round the corners where the bowl meets the spine, but keep a small hint of a corner on the top left so the letter feels strong.
- 3Thicken the spine and bowl to an even width, with the bowl swelling slightly at the far right.
- 4Outline the body in one pass and draw a single counter shaped like a leaning half oval inside.
- 5Add an arrow or a spike at the top left corner, then fill, highlight the bowl's upper edge and add a block behind the spine.
Tip: Draw the counter as a plump leaning bean first, then the spine and bowl. That one hole decides the personality of the D, so it is worth getting right before anything else.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase d
- 1Draw a tall stem first, extending above the x-height, with a round bowl attached to its left side at the baseline.
- 2Make the bowl a rounded oval, the same height as the other lowercase letters, and let it tuck into the stem.
- 3Thicken the stem more than the bowl, then outline both as one shape.
- 4Shape the top of the stem with a cut, an arrow or a small curl, which gives the letter its character.
- 5Fill, highlight the bowl, and give the base of the stem a small kick to connect with the next letter.
Tip: The lowercase d is a bowl and a tall stem that can be tilted slightly forward. It will blend well with neighbours that also use tall stems.
What makes D awkward or easy
D is a big flat side followed by a big round side, which creates a very large counter that looks empty beside narrower letters. The spine is easy to overpower, and the bowl swallows the space around it. The standard fixes are to tighten the counter, add a notch or a highlight inside, or break the symmetry by making the bowl bulge toward the top.
Variations
A tag D is a vertical dash with a quick swooping bowl. A throw-up D is a thick, fat shape with a small leaning counter and a single outline. A piece D might have a pointed top left corner, a segmented bowl with two colours and a 3D block along the spine. Wildstyle D often turns the bowl into a ribbon that wraps around the next letter.
Common mistakes with graffiti D
The bowl is a perfect half circle that feels stamped.
Let the bowl bulge toward the top or bottom, and keep the curve slightly uneven for a hand-drawn look.
The counter is much too large and the letter looks hollow.
Reduce the counter and thicken the walls, so the body is at least as wide as the counter.
The spine is too thin compared with the bowl.
Make the spine the heaviest part of the D and let the bowl taper slightly as it curves.
The corners are sharp on one side and round on the other without reason.
Keep both corners consistent, or deliberately sharpen only the top left for a clear style choice.
Ideas for graffiti D
D works as the anchor of names like Dani, Dre or Dex and as the solid centre of a three-letter crew tag. A useful practice exercise is to draw ten Ds on one page, each with a different counter shape, and pick the three that read best at small size.
