E in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
E is a spine with three arms, and the arms are the fun part. Each one can be stretched, tipped with an arrow or tucked into the next letter. The danger is the spaces between the arms, which fill up fast once outlines go on. A good graffiti E keeps the arms chunky and the gaps open, with the middle arm shorter than the other two so the letter stays recognisable.

How to draw a graffiti capital E
- 1Draw a leaning spine and three horizontal arms, the middle one shorter, with equal gaps between the arms.
- 2Slant all three arms upward a few degrees so they follow the lean of the letter and look like they are moving.
- 3Thicken the spine first and then the arms, keeping every arm at least as thick as the gaps between them.
- 4Outline the shape and trim the inner corners with a small cut so the gaps stay clean.
- 5Finish the top arm with an arrow pointing right and the bottom with a spike, then fill, highlight the spine and add a block under each arm.
Tip: Count the white gaps before you outline. If the gaps are narrower than a thumbnail, shorten the arms or thin the spine, because a clogged E turns into a block.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase e
- 1Draw a small oval with a horizontal bar through the middle, leaning forward, the same height as the other lowercase letters.
- 2Open the right side of the oval below the bar and leave a clear mouth for the typical e shape.
- 3Thicken the oval, keeping the eye above the bar as an open counter.
- 4Finish the lower terminal with a flick that kicks out to the right and links to the next letter.
- 5Outline, fill and add a highlight on the upper curve of the eye.
Tip: Lowercase e is a tiny letter, so keep the eye large and the bar thick. If the eye closes up, the e turns into an a or an o in a word.
What makes E awkward or easy
Three arms with two gaps give E a lot of surface that can go wrong. Arms of unequal weight make it look broken, and narrow gaps vanish under outlines. The upside is that E is the easiest letter to decorate, since every arm can end in a different shape, and the open right side makes it easy to link to whatever comes next.
Variations
A tag E is often a backwards three, a quick two-loop shape with no arms at all. A throw-up E is a thick spine with three chunky arms, outlined once. A piece E may feature arrows, split colours on each arm and a deep 3D block. Wildstyle E stretches the arms into long ribbons that wrap around the neighbouring letters.
Common mistakes with graffiti E
All three arms are the same length and the E looks like a comb.
Shorten the middle arm and make the top arm the longest, which gives the letter a clear rhythm.
The gaps between arms close up once outlines are added.
Make the gaps as wide as an arm, then shorten the arms if you need extra space.
The spine is thin and the arms are heavy.
Thicken the spine so it matches the arms and holds the letter together.
The arms are perfectly horizontal and the E feels static.
Tilt the arms upward in line with the lean of the letter so they appear to move.
Ideas for graffiti E
E sits in names like Eli, Emma or Eve and in words like Elite and Epic. Try drawing the three arms of an E as three different arrow styles on a single page, so you can see which suits a word. In a crew name, E is often the letter where you add the biggest extension.

Graffiti E you can copy and paste
No Unicode graffiti alphabet exists. For something close, copy bold gothic 𝕰 𝖊, the black square 🅴, or the bubble form Ⓔ ⓔ. They are fixed single glyphs, so the arms cannot be stretched into arrows the way they can in a sketch.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
