F in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
F is half an E, and that missing bottom arm leaves a lot of room. The letter has a spine, a long top flag and a shorter middle bar, and most of its personality comes from how the top bends. It's a good letter for arrows, since the top arm can point forward like a banner, and the empty space beneath the middle bar gives you room to tuck in a part of the next letter.

How to draw a graffiti capital F
- 1Draw a leaning spine and a long top arm that sweeps to the right, plus a shorter middle arm about half way down.
- 2Curve the top arm slightly upward at the end so it reads like a flag blowing in the wind.
- 3Thicken the spine and both arms, making the top arm the heaviest part and the middle arm a little thinner.
- 4Outline and keep the open space under the middle arm clear, since it defines the F.
- 5Tip the top arm with an arrow or a hooked terminal, fill, highlight the top edge of the flag and add a block behind the spine.
Tip: Let the top arm be at least twice as long as the middle arm. That ratio is what makes the letter read as an F rather than a stray E.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase f
- 1Draw a tall stem leaning forward and add a hook that curves out from the top toward the right.
- 2Add a short cross bar through the stem at x-height, as wide as the hook.
- 3Thicken the stem and the hook, keeping the crossbar slightly thinner.
- 4Let the bottom of the stem kick left or right, or continue below the baseline for a tag-style tail.
- 5Outline, fill and add a highlight along the curve of the hook.
Tip: The lowercase f can drop below the baseline in some styles, giving a long tail that can run under the following letters.
What makes F awkward or easy
F has an unbalanced silhouette: heavy at the top and empty at the bottom. In a word that makes the base of the letter look weak, so writers often thicken the spine or push the next letter closer to fill the gap. The top arm is the dominant feature, which makes F a good vehicle for an arrow or a swoop but a poor choice for fine detail.
Variations
A tag F is a hooked line with a crossbar added in one move. A throw-up F is a thick spine with two chunky bars. A piece F may curl the top arm into a ribbon, add a pointed tip and place a highlight along the flag. Wildstyle F stretches the top arm so far that it frames the next two letters.
Common mistakes with graffiti F
The top and middle arms are the same length and the F looks like a plain E without a base.
Make the top arm clearly longer than the middle arm so the letter has a flag and a shorter bar.
The empty space below the middle arm is filled with decoration.
Keep that space clear, since it is what makes the letter an F rather than a block.
The spine stops at the baseline and the letter feels weak.
Thicken the spine and add a block or a kick at its foot to give it weight.
The arms are straight and stiff.
Tilt the arms upward slightly and let the top arm curve, so the letter has movement.
Ideas for graffiti F
F is a good letter for names like Finn, Fay or Fiona and for words like Fresh and Flow. Try drawing a row of F shapes where only the top arm changes: a spike, a loop, a ribbon, an arrow. It is a fast way to build a library of terminals.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
